Tomato brown rugose fruit virus: An emerging and rapidly spreading plant RNA virus that threatens tomato production worldwide

Summary: Tomato brown rugose fruit virus (ToBRFV) is an emerging RNA virus that infects tomato and pepper and threatens tomato production worldwide. It is mainly transmitted through contaminated seeds and mechanical contact, and can break down genetic resistance. Currently, no ToBRFV-resistant tomato cultivars are available, and traditional management measures have limited success. The development of novel genetic resistance and resistant cultivars is the most effective strategy for controlling ToBRFV.

Disinfectants Useful to Manage the Emerging Tomato Brown Rugose Fruit Virus in Greenhouse Tomato Production

Summary: The study aimed to identify effective disinfectants to deactivate Tomato brown rugose fruit virus (ToBRFV) for managing this emerging disease in greenhouse tomato production. 11 disinfectants were evaluated, and 1% Virocid, 2% Virkon S, 0.25% sodium hypochlorite, and 2.5% trisodium phosphate achieved complete deactivation of ToBRFV within 15 minutes.

Summary: Tomato brown rugose fruit virus (ToBRFV) and cucumber green mottle mosaic virus (CGMMV) have caused severe crop damages worldwide. Soil-mediated dispersion of tobamoviruses is a major hindrance towards mitigating disease spread. We have established a rigorous platform for studying disinfectant efficacy in greenhouses and found that chlorine-based disinfectants are significantly efficient in preventing disease spread of ToBRFV and CGMMV.

Effectiveness of disinfectants against the spread of tobamoviruses: Tomato brown rugose fruit virus and Cucumber green mottle mosaic virus

Summary: This study evaluated the effectiveness of 16 chemical disinfectants against mechanical transmission of two emerging tobamoviruses, ToBRFV and CGMMV. Common disinfectants with broad spectrum activities against both tobamoviruses were identified, suggesting their potential broader effects against other tobamoviruses or even other viruses.
