Hepatitis E virus in Saudi Arabia: more surveillance needed

Sherif Aly El-Kafrawy et al.

Summary: Hepatitis E virus is a leading cause of acute hepatitis in Saudi Arabia. Larger nationwide studies are needed to investigate the prevalence and risk factors. Camels may play a potential role in zoonotic transmission, and future research should focus on raising awareness and conducting widespread testing and screening.

Genetic diversity of hepatitis E virus (HEV) in imported and domestic camels in Saudi Arabia

Sherif A. El-Kafrawy et al.

Summary: Camels have gained attention as potential hosts for epidemic zoonotic viruses since the discovery of MERS-CoV. This study aims to genetically analyze DcHEV in domestic and imported camels in Saudi Arabia. The results confirm the detection of DcHEV in both domestic and imported camels, with higher positivity in domestic camels. Further investigations are needed to identify the potential threat of DcHEV as a zoonotic virus in human and camel populations.

Calibrating Hepatitis E Virus Serological Assays Using Asymptomatic Specimens Obtained in Japan

Kazutaka Terahara et al.

Summary: This study aimed to calibrate HEV serological assays and found that the in-house ELISA had higher sensitivity for detecting HEV IgM and IgA compared to commercial kits. The performance of commercial kits could be improved by optimizing the cutoff and reducing nonspecific background noise. Asymptomatic specimens and background subtraction play important roles in the optimization of HEV serological assays.

Prevalence of hepatitis E virus in children from Northeast of Argentina

Alfredo P. Martinez et al.

Summary: The study aimed to assess the prevalence of hepatitis E virus (HEV) in a young population from Northeast Argentina. It found a surprisingly low prevalence of HEV in children from rural areas of Chaco Province, which may be unrelated to the lack of clean drinking water in the region.

Hepatitis E: Genotypes, strategies to prevent and manage, and the existing knowledge gaps

Lubna Kamani et al.

Summary: HEV is considered an emerging source of viral hepatitis worldwide, with many unanswered questions about its characteristics and pathogenesis. Current knowledge about HEV and existing prevention tools still have room for improvement. More research is needed to address gaps in understanding about diagnostic tools, vaccines, and the manifestation of the virus in specific populations like pregnant women and immunocompromised patients.

Seroprevalence of the hepatitis E virus antibodies among blood donors in the Qassim region, Saudi Arabia

Bader Y. Alhatlani et al.

Summary: The study found that the seroprevalence of HEV among blood donors in the Qassim region was lower than previous estimates for other regions of the country and neighboring countries, but the seropositivity of anti-HEV IgG and IgM was significantly higher in non-Saudi donors.

Immunogenicity and Antigenicity of Rabbit Hepatitis E Virus-Like Particles Produced by Recombinant Baculoviruses

Huimin Bai et al.

Summary: Rabbit hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a novel HEV which belongs to genotype 3 in the Orthohepevirus A species. Through expressing truncated rabbit HEV ORF2 proteins, two types of virus-like particles were obtained, with RsVLPs showing stronger antigenic cross-reactivity against different HEV genotypes. Immunization with RsVLPs completely protected rabbits from challenge by rabbit HEV, suggesting potential for vaccine development.
