Regional and country-level trends in cervical cancer screening coverage in sub-Saharan Africa: A systematic analysis of population-based surveys (2000-2020)

Lily Yang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed 52 population-based surveys and estimated cervical cancer screening coverage using a Bayesian modeling framework. The findings showed that overall screening coverage for cervical cancer is sub-optimal and has not improved much over the past 2 decades, except in Southern Africa. Action is needed to increase screening coverage in order to achieve elimination of cervical cancer.

HPV prevalence among young adult women living with and without HIV in Botswana for future HPV vaccine impact monitoring

Nancy McClung et al.

Summary: This study evaluated HPV prevalence among the youngest unvaccinated women in Botswana and compared the prevalence among women living with HIV and without HIV. The results showed that women living with HIV had higher rates of sexual experience and lifetime sex partners compared to women without HIV. All HPV types were more prevalent among women living with HIV, including any HPV, high risk-HPV, and quadrivalent vaccine HPV types. There were no differences in HPV prevalence based on perinatal or non-perinatal HIV infection status.

Comparison of self-collected versus clinician collected cervicovaginal specimens for detection of high risk human papillomavirus among HIV infected women in Ethiopia

Agajie Likie Bogale et al.

Summary: This study compared the performance of self-collected vaginal specimens with clinician-collected cervical specimens for detecting HPV among HIV positive women in Ethiopia. The prevalence of high-risk HPV was higher in self-collected samples, and there was good agreement between the two sampling methods. Therefore, it is recommended that the Ministry of Health in Ethiopia promote the use of self-sampling techniques to improve screening coverage.

Oral and oropharyngeal high-risk HPV prevalence, HIV status, and risk behaviours in a cohort of South African men who have sex with men

Harshita B. Mistry et al.

Summary: Data lag is evident in studies on HPV prevalence in the head and neck of MSM in Southern Africa, with underreporting of sexual behaviors and associated factors. HPV vaccination has not yet started for this population. The study found that 6% of MSM in this cohort had high-risk HPV in the mouth/oropharynx, and sexual practices, such as anal sex and oral insertive sex, were significantly associated with oral/oropharyngeal HPV status. Rimming was also associated with HIV status, with HIV-positive participants having a higher presence of oral/oropharyngeal HPV. The study highlights the importance of urgently studying vaccination as an intervention for prevention in this vulnerable population.

Prevalence and genotype specific concordance of oro-genital and anal human papillomavirus infections among sexually active Nigerian women

Imran O. Morhason-Bello et al.

Summary: This study assessed the prevalence and concordance of oro-genital and anal HPV genotype specific infections among sexually active women in Ibadan, Nigeria. Results showed a high prevalence of HPV infections in the cervix, vulva, anus, and oral cavity, with HPV 35 being the most prevalent high-risk genotype. Concordance of HPV types in the four anatomic sites was observed in 10.0% of women. The study highlights the need for large longitudinal studies to better understand HPV epidemiology in the region.
