First Insights into the Repertoire of Secretory Lectins in Rotifers

Summary: Aquatic lophotrochozoan animals, known for high biodiversity, are considered an abundant source of bioactive molecules. Lectins, proteins with exceptional carbohydrate recognition properties, are attractive targets for biotechnological research. This study provides an overview of secretory lectin-like molecules encoded by the genomes of six target rotifer species. Despite a high molecular diversity, the total number of rotifer secretory lectins is lower compared to other lophotrochozoans, and there is no evidence of lineage-specific expansion events. Rotifers, with their evolutionary divergence, widespread distribution in aquatic environments, and ease of collection and rearing in the laboratory, may be interesting targets for glycobiological studies.

Summary: The study conducted a comparative analysis of the ultrastructure of the gelatinous secretions of four species of Superorder Gnesiotrocha (Monogononta) and found that they produce three types of secretions: an external gelatinous tube, a thick glycocalyx, and an adhesive peduncle. The different chemistries and anatomical origins of the three gelatinous secretions suggest an independent evolutionary history for each.
