Morphology and glandular composition of the myzorhynchus and the remnant apical organ in adult cestodes of the order Rhinebothriidea from batoids off Argentina

Sebastian Franzese et al.

Summary: The study aims to analyze the function of the myzorhynchus and remnant apical organ in adult cestodes of the Rhinebothriidea order. The structures were analyzed in 12 species from six genera and two families. The glandular composition of the myzorhynchus and remnant apical organ were studied using histochemical techniques and/or transmission electron microscopy. The findings suggest that the type of gland cells in these structures can be used for the diagnosis of certain genera.

Ultrastructure and histochemistry of the scolex of two Neotropical proteocephalidean species (Cestoda: Onchoproteocephalidea)

Leonardo Damian Mutti et al.

Summary: This study provides a first-time description of the internal ultrastructure of the scolex and the histochemical composition of the apical glands in two South American proteocephalidean cestodes. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy were employed to observe the tegumental ultrastructure, while histochemical techniques were used to determine the types of gland secretion. Two types of glands were identified in the scolex, and the microtriches pattern for one species was confirmed, while for the other species, it was described for the first time. The presence of sensory receptors and the systematic value of certain characters were also discussed.

Parasites as tags for stock identification of a highly exploited vulnerable skate Dipturus brevicaudatus (Chondrichthyes: Rajidae) in the south-western Atlantic Ocean, a complementary tool for its conservation

Manuel M. Irigoitia et al.

Summary: Chondrichthyan populations are highly susceptible to overfishing due to their low reproductive potential and population growth. The Dipturus brevicaudatus skate in Argentine waters is particularly vulnerable to commercial fishing as it is frequently caught as by-catch. A study on its parasites has discovered three distinct stocks, providing a basis for management and recovery strategies to preserve this vulnerable species.

Morphological study of members of the genus Echeneibothrium (Cestoda: Rhinebothriidea: Echeneibothriidae) from rajiform skates of the Argentine Sea and analysis of the phylogenetic relationships within the family Echeneibothriidae

Summary: A new species of cestode belonging to the genus Echeneibothrium was discovered in the Argentine Sea, along with two previously known species. The study also provides emendations to the descriptions and redescriptions of these species and performs a phylogenetic analysis to determine the relationships within the family Echeneibothriidae.

Emerging global novelty in phyllobothriidean tapeworms (Cestoda: Phyllobothriidea) from sharks and skates (Elasmobranchii)

Janine N. Caira et al.

Summary: New genera of tapeworms were identified based on molecular sequence data, each parasitizing different species of elasmobranchs. Morphological characteristics were examined using light and scanning electron microscopy. These new genera are supported by a taxonomically comprehensive molecular phylogenetic analysis, with the addition of newly generated sequence data, to provide new insights into the study of phyllobothriidean tapeworms.

Hidden diversity of the most basal tapeworms (Cestoda, Gyrocotylidea), the enigmatic parasites of holocephalans (Chimaeriformes)

Daniel Barcak et al.

Summary: The study reveals significant differences between the genetic and morphological data of Gyrocotylideans, indicating potential taxonomic issues and complex relationships among these parasitic flatworms. It suggests that a single Gyrocotylidean species may parasitize multiple holocephalan host species, highlighting the need for thorough genetic and morphological characterization of hologenophores for resolving taxonomic problems and conflicts between morphological and molecular data in Gyrocotyle species.

First complete description of the dark-mouth skate Raja arctowskii Dollo, 1904 from Antarctic waters, assigned to the genus Bathyraja (Elasmobranchii, Rajiformes, Arhynchobatidae)

Matthias F. W. Stehmann et al.

Summary: The dark-mouth skate, Raja arctowskii Dollo, 1904 from Antarctic waters is a unique case in skate taxonomy that has been known for over 100 years but remained undescribed due to lack of specimens. It is one of the smallest species in the genus Bathyraja, characterized by specific features and a wide-ranging distribution in the Southern Ocean.
