Resurrection of the genus Subulo Smith, 1827 for the gray brocket deer, with designation of a neotype

Agda Maria Bernegossi et al.

Summary: This study reviewed and clarified the taxonomy of the gray brocket deer through proposal of an updated nomenclature and characterization of specimens collected near the original type locality. The results supported the polyphyly of the genus Mazama and validated the genus Subulo for the gray brocket deer.

Cytogenetic Mapping of Cattle BAC Probes for the Hypothetical Ancestral Karyotype of the Family Cervidae

Agda Maria Bernegossi et al.

Summary: Cervids have the most diverse karyotypes among mammals. In this study, we focused on the gray brocket deer and used molecular cytogenetic markers derived from the cattle genome to map its karyotype. Our results revealed interchromosomal rearrangements and intrachromosomal rearrangements that have separated the cattle and gray brocket deer karyotypes. These findings contribute to the understanding of deer karyotype diversity and taxonomy, and will be valuable for future studies on karyotypic evolution in cervids.

Chromosomal Polymorphism and Speciation: The Case of the Genus Mazama (Cetartiodactyla; Cervidae)

David Javier Galindo et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the impact of chromosomal polymorphisms as reproductive barriers within the genus Mazama, showing that inter-specific hybrids between Mazama gouazoubira and Mazama nemorivaga exhibited different degrees of fertility reduction, while intra-specific hybrids of Mazama americana with different cytotypes showed varying pairing rates for Robertsonian translocations and tandem fusions.

Sperm chromosome segregation of rob(4;16) and rob(4;16)inv(4) in the brown brocket deer (Mazama gouazoubira)

D. J. Galindo et al.

Summary: The study used FISH with bovine WCP and BAC probes to analyze chromosome rearrangements and gametic segregation in brown brocket deer, finding a slight to moderate increase in the rates of unbalanced meiotic segregation products in individuals heterozygous for RT and RT/PAIs, but without statistical significance.

Primer System for Reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) Mitochondrial Genome Sequencing

I. V. Artyushin et al.

Summary: In this study, a primer system and optimized PCR protocol were developed for amplification of the reindeer mitochondrial genome. Two mitochondrial genomes from wild and domestic reindeer in the Nenets Autonomous Okrug were sequenced and assembled, and compared with known mitochondria from domestic reindeers in China and Japan. The results identified 160 polymorphic sites, including private alleles for domestic and wild reindeer from the Nenets Autonomous Okrug. The developed system provides new information for phylogeographic and genetic variation studies of reindeer.
