Analytical solution for temperature distribution in functionally graded cylindrical shells under convective cooling

Amin Emamian et al.

Summary: An analytical solution is obtained for the temperature distribution in a cylindrical shell made of functionally graded material, with particular emphasis on the dominant role of convective cooling. The obtained solution is validated using numerical data and tested for practical problems with different boundary conditions. Parametric studies reveal that boundary conditions play a dominant role in the cooling rate, while the material constant has no significant effect on the temperature distribution. This study can contribute to the improvement of design and production processes for cylindrical shells made of functionally graded material.

Effect of phase lags of moisture-heat flow on the hygrothermoelastic field of hollow cylinders with convective surfaces

Yi Peng et al.

Summary: In this article, a hygrothermal coupling model is established for convective surfaces, taking into account the Dufour effect and Soret effect. The model is based on the phase delay of heat and moisture fluxes, and the effects of different relaxation times and moist-heat coupling on the temperature, moisture, and stress are analyzed. The results show that the temperature and moisture distributions, as well as the hygrothermal stress fields, exhibit different behaviors depending on the coefficient of the Robin condition.

Size-dependent nonlinear vibration analysis of cracked graphene-platelets-reinforced-composites (GPLRC) plate under parametric excitation

Saeedeh Qaderi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the response of size-dependent randomly distributed graphene-platelet-reinforced composite (GPLRC) plates under periodic parametric excitation. The results show that dispersing graphene platelets as reinforcement material in the plate layer can improve the structural behavior and decrease the amplitude response of the system with the presence of a crack, compared to a similar system without reinforcement and crack.

Performance analysis and optimization of combined heat and power system based on PEM fuel cell and ? type Stirling engine

Mahmood Mehregan et al.

Summary: A new combined heat and power (CHP) system is proposed, which combines a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell and a beta type Stirling engine. Two thermodynamic models are used to analyze the performance of the system and its impact on energy, environment, and economic factors. The optimization results show that the recommended engine speed, fuel cell temperature, and current density are 3000 rpm, 94.5 degrees C, and 0.67 A cm-2, respectively. Additionally, if the goal is to maximize CHP efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions, starting the system with slightly lower engine speed, lower temperature, and higher current density is recommended.

Vibration analysis of polymer composite plates reinforced with graphene platelets resting on two-parameter viscoelastic foundation

Saeedeh Qaderi et al.

Summary: In this paper, the vibration behavior of a composite plate reinforced with graphene platelets on a viscoelastic foundation in a thermal environment is examined using a higher-order shear deformation theory. The material properties of the composite plate reinforced with graphene platelets are determined using the Halpin-Tsai model. The Euler-Lagrange equations of the composite plate are obtained using Hamilton's principle and Navier's method is used to analyze and solve the problem. The effects of various parameters on the vibrational reaction of the structure, such as geometry, graphene platelet weight fraction, temperature changes, and viscoelastic foundation, are analyzed.

Numerical simulation of the electroosmotic flow of the Carreau-Yasuda model in the rectangular microchannel

Saeed Ghorbani et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the numerical simulation of electroosmotic flow of the Carreau-Yasuda model in a rectangular microchannel. The study explores the effects of various parameters on the velocity field and temperature distribution, showing that increasing parameters such as the Weissenberg number, electrokinetic diameter, and exponential power reduces the maximum velocity field in the microchannel. This study is reported for the first time and contributes to the understanding of non-Newtonian fluid behavior in microchannels.

Thermal rectification mechanism of composite cylinders with temperature and stress-dependent interface thermal resistance

Jianning Zhao et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the thermoelastic coupling response of a cylindrical thermal rectifier and analyzes the effects of initial interface gap, boundary conditions, geometry parameters, and material pairs on the thermal rectification ratio using numerical methods. The results show that the equivalent thermal conductance is the key factor for optimizing the thermal rectification ratio, and adjusting the initial interface gap can switch the status of the interface gap and achieve the maximum thermal rectification ratio.

Two-dimensional temperature distribution in FGM sectors with the power-law variation in radial and circumferential directions

Amin Amiri Delouei et al.

Summary: This study presents a steady-state analytical solution for two-dimensional heat conduction in cylindrical segments made of functionally graded materials, utilizing Fourier transform and separation of variables. Sturm-Liouville theory is employed to find adequate Fourier transformations, with continuous variations considered based on power-law functions and non-homogeneous boundary conditions applied. The mathematical robustness and generality of the solution, along with its verification through an illustrative example, are highlighted as primary advantages not often seen in prior literature.

Transient response of the hygro-thermo-elastic field in hollow cylinders under heat-moisture shock via hyperbolic non-Fourier heat conduction and non-Fick diffusion

Y. Peng et al.

Summary: A hyperbolic diffusion law is proposed in this paper to study the transient response of the hygro-thermo-elastic field in infinitely long hollow cylinders subjected to sudden heat and moisture shock. The thermal and moisture relaxation time effect between temperature and moisture is significant for composites, and a finite hygrothermal wave speed is achieved.

Unsteady ultra-lean combustion of methane and biogas in a porous burner - An experimental study

Rabeeah Habib et al.

Summary: The study investigates the response of ultra-lean flames stabilized in a porous burner to fluctuations imposed on the fuel flow rate, showing that the flame oscillations qualitatively follow the temporal variation in fuel flow but with higher amplitudes for methane compared to biogas. Exposure of the burner to fuel fluctuations for a long time leads to flame destabilization, while stable combustion can be achieved for methane mixtures within certain amplitude ranges. The study also highlights the significant effects of unsteady heat transfer in porous media on flame position fluctuations.

A new mathematical technique for analysis of internal viscoplastic flows through rectangular ducts

M. Norouzi et al.

Summary: A semianalytical technique for solving the flow of Bingham yield-stress materials inside rectangular ducts is proposed in this paper, using squircle mapping and the Ritz method for solving nonlinear equations accurately. The method can capture the positions of both the plug and dead regions, and a genetic algorithm approach is implemented for finding optimized solutions. The results are benchmarked against numerical works and the critical Bingham number for different aspect ratios is reported, with an alternative elliptical mapping approach proposed for cases with sufficiently small Bingham numbers.
