Bacterial Epidemiology and Antimicrobial Resistance Profiles in Children Reported by the ISPED Program in China, 2016 to 2020

Pan Fu et al.

Summary: The ISPED program was established in 2015 to monitor and analyze bacterial epidemiology and antimicrobial resistance in children. From 2016 to 2020, a total of 288,377 isolates were collected from 11 tertiary care children's hospitals in China, showing high rates of multidrug-resistant organisms. The study highlighted the importance of effective monitoring and antimicrobial stewardship in children to address the urgent threat posed by MDROs.

Measuring routine childhood vaccination coverage in 204 countries and territories, 1980-2019: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2020, Release 1

Natalie C. Galles et al.

Summary: By 2019, global coverage of key childhood vaccines such as DTP3, MCV1, and Pol3 had significantly increased compared to 1980. Despite this progress, global vaccine coverage plateaued in the past decade, with some countries even experiencing a decrease in DTP3 coverage. Strengthening vaccine data monitoring systems and focusing on underserved populations are crucial to ensure all children have access to life-saving vaccines.

Prevalence and Antimicrobial Resistance of Bacteria in Children With Acute Otitis Media and Ear Discharge A Systematic Review

Saskia Hullegie et al.

Summary: In children with acute onset ear discharge, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae are the predominant bacteria, followed by Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. Limited antimicrobial resistance data are available, and no clear shift in the prevalence of bacteria and antimicrobial resistance over time was found. Ongoing surveillance is needed to guide antibiotic selection and assess the impact of children's pneumococcal conjugate vaccine status in children with acute otitis media.
