Integrated multi-omics analyses reveal the key microbial phylotypes affecting anaerobic digestion performance under ammonia stress

Hong Zhang et al.

Summary: Ammonia inhibition is a common cause of instability in commercial biogas plants. This study used metagenomics and metaproteomics analyses to investigate the sensitivity of different functional bacteria to ammonia stress, their ability to adapt to ammonia stress, and the key phylotypes affecting anaerobic digestion (AD) performance.

Treatability of effluent from small scale dye shop using water hyacinth

Aparupa Shenoy et al.

Summary: Environmental and economical sustainable water treatment systems are becoming more attractive as water scarcity, population growth, and decentralization become prominent issues in many countries and communities. In India, small scale textile dye shops often discharge highly concentrated effluent containing synthetic dyes into the municipal waste water system, posing a risk to the receiving water body and treatment plants. This study explores the use of lab scale constructed wetland planted with water hyacinth to treat dye-rich effluent from these shops. The results show that the setup achieved significant removal rates of BOD, TDS, and COD, offering a low-cost, simple, and environmentally friendly treatment option.

Biogas potential determination and production optimisation through optimal substrate ratio feeding in co-digestion of water hyacinth, municipal solid waste and cow dung

Tawanda Kunatsa et al.

Summary: Modelling and optimisation of biogas production from different substrate mixtures is currently lacking in research and development. This study presents a model for determining and optimising the co-digestion mix ratios of water hyacinth, municipal solid waste, and cow dung, leading to an increase in biogas output. The results demonstrate the importance of informed optimal co-digestion models in the biogas industry.

Sustainability assessment of water hyacinth with swine dung for biogas production, methane enhancement, and biofertilizer

Yuwalee Unpaprom et al.

Summary: This study investigated biogas production from anaerobic digestion processes using crushed water hyacinth and swine dung. Results showed that NaOH pretreated samples produced more biogas, and SEM provided supporting evidence of structural changes in water hyacinth. The optimal water hyacinth concentration in co-digestion mixture with swine dung yielded the highest methane production, and the digestate had high nutrient concentrations suitable for use as fertilizer.

Digestate Liquid Fraction Treatment with Filters Filled with Recovery Materials

Ilaria Piccoli et al.

Summary: Constructed wetlands (CWs) are a green technology for digestate liquid fraction (DLF) treatment, but they may struggle with high suspended solid and organic loads in wastewater. A digestate pretreatment is necessary to address the challenges. This study tested the performance of filters filled with recovery materials for DLF pretreatment, finding that an activation period is necessary for effective nitrogen removal and the particle size of filling material is crucial for phosphorus removal. Further research on filling media and microbial interactions is needed for long-term efficiency.

Utilization of water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) rejects as phosphate-rich fertilizer

Anyi Ramirez et al.

Summary: Phosphorus recovery from water hyacinth shows potential for alleviating future P supply shortage. Thermal treatment of calcium and P-rich water hyacinth at different temperatures results in the formation of hydroxyapatite and other Ca-rich phases, which can be utilized as fertilizer for slow release of P in aqueous solutions and for soil neutralization to support crop growth.
