Summary: This study investigated the degradation ability of commercial hydrolytic enzymes belonging to different subclasses on different aliphatic polyesters. The results showed that PCL and PBSA were the most biodegradable polyesters under the conditions used in this study, while PLA and PPC were not completely degraded. Chemical analysis confirmed that the enzymatic degradation occurred homogeneously from the surface without significantly affecting the macromolecular structure and thermal stability.

Enhancing the biodegradation of (bio)plastic through pretreatments: A critical review

Najwa Mat Yasin et al.

Summary: As plastic packaging becomes indispensable in the plastic economy, there is a need to recapture the material value of plastic waste through biodegradation. This review explores the different pretreatment methods that enhance plastic biodegradation, including biotic factors, abiotic factors, and polymer characteristics. Chemical and physical pretreatments have shown promising results in increasing bioconversion rates and biogas production. Among these, non-thermal physical treatments have the most potential due to their low energy requirements and lack of chemical additions. Pretreatments are expected to play a crucial role in the biodegradation of plastics within a circular economy approach.

Progress in upcycling polylactic acid waste as an alternative carbon source: A review

Ce Sun et al.

Summary: Polylactic acid (PLA) is the highest produced bio-based plastic globally, used to replace petroleum-based plastics and reduce environmental pollution. However, the raw materials for PLA production mainly come from food, posing a threat to food security. Recycling PLA can reduce waste pollution and lower carbon emissions.

Revisiting soil bacterial counting methods: Optimal soil storage and pretreatment methods and comparison of culture-dependent and -independent methods

Jeonggil Lee et al.

Summary: Different methods have been explored for quantifying soil bacteria, with challenges in identifying the optimal approach. Storage temperature and pretreatment methods play a crucial role in preserving bacterial viability and reducing interference from soil particles. Among the counting methods evaluated in this study, the most probable number (MPN) was rapid and reliable, but may underestimate anaerobic bacteria. DNA quantitation method tended to overestimate bacterial numbers.

Pilot-Scale Composting Test of Polylactic Acid for Social Implementation

Nobuyuki Kawashima et al.

Summary: The chemical industry and plastics value chain are facing challenges in resource conversion and environmental burden. It is crucial to explore the future direction of plastics using a circular economy approach that includes resource circulation, carbon neutrality, and promoting after-use treatment. Polylactic acid (PLA) has shown promise as a biobased material in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and managing waste effectively through its biodegradability in composting facilities. This study conducted a pilot-scale test on PLA under actual composting conditions, demonstrating its biodegradability, safety, and negligible impact on the composting process, providing valuable insights for creating a sustainable social framework.
