Cytokinins Induce Prehaustoria Coordinately with Quinone Signals in the Parasitic Plant Striga hermonthica

Summary: Orobanchaceae parasitic plants pose a major threat to global food security. This study explores the role of cytokinins (CKs) as haustorium-inducing factors (HIFs) in various parasitic species. The findings suggest that CKs act as HIFs in the obligate parasite Striga hermonthica but not in the facultative parasite Phtheirospermum japonicum. The study also reveals the importance of CKs for prehaustorium formation in obligate parasitic plants.
