Influence of Graphene Nanosheets on Thermo-Physical and Tribological Properties of Sustainable Cutting Fluids for MQL Application in Machining Processes

Vitor Baldin et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of adding graphene at different concentrations on the thermophysical and tribological properties of cutting fluids. The results show that using cutting fluids (with or without graphene) in experiments exhibits better tribological behavior compared to dry conditions. Specifically, the MQL15 vegetable-based cutting fluid demonstrates the best lubricating performance in milling tests.

Fatigue damage initiation mechanisms in bearing steel

Frantisek Novy et al.

Summary: This work investigates the fatigue damage initiation mechanisms in high-grade, low-alloyed 100Cr6 bearing steel through experimental tests. The study reveals that surface fatigue failure is caused by persistent slip bands from surface roughness, while subsurface fatigue failure is caused by non-metallic inclusions, primarily TiN and Al2O3. Interestingly, the chemical composition standard for 100Cr6 bearing steel does not prescribe the content of titanium, despite the high fatigue life requirement for bearing steels.

Improvements of the MQL Cooling-Lubrication Condition by the Addition of Multilayer Graphene Platelets in Peripheral Grinding of SAE 52100 Steel

Bruno Souza Abrao et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the performance of multilayer graphene platelets dispersed in cutting fluid and applied through MQL technique during the peripheral surface grinding of hardened steel. The influence of these solid particles on the surface and sub-surface integrity of the machined components was analyzed, with smaller roughness values and decreases of microhardness obtained using graphene under cooling-lubrication conditions compared to conventional MQL technique without solid particles.
