Experimental and numerical investigation into development mechanism of wheel polygonalization

Jian Mu et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the issue of polygonal wear on a specific metro line in China. The 7th-order and 8th-order wheel polygonal wear were commonly observed at operating speeds of 60-70 km/h, with corresponding excitation frequencies ranging from 44.3 to 58.9 Hz. A clear natural resonance at 50.7 Hz was found through analysis of the axle box acceleration and verified by the eigen analysis of the metro track. Furthermore, a vehicle-track coupling model with polygonal wheel was established to analyze the vertical wheel/rail forces induced by polygonal wear. The results showed that the P2 resonance was the main contributor to the high amplitude vertical wheel/rail forces, which also played a major role in the development of polygonal wear.

Rail rolling contact fatigue formation and evolution with surface defects

S. Y. Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the formation mechanism of surface defects on rails and traces the evolution process of RCF behavior around the defects. Experimental results show that surface defects can cause RCF cracks that propagate deep into the subsurface of rail, leading to severe damage.

Numerical prediction on the effect of friction modifiers on adhesion behaviours in the wheel-rail starved EHL contact

Qun Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of friction modifiers on the adhesion coefficient in the wheel/rail interface. By using a non-Newtonian fluid model and micro-EHL analysis, the relationship between the adhesion coefficient and the quantity of friction modifiers is determined.

Study on wear and rolling contact fatigue behaviours of defective rail under different slip ratio and contact stress conditions

Shu-yue Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of slip ratio and contact stress on the evolution of rolling contact fatigue (RCF) behavior of material around surface defects on rail. Experimental results indicate that slip ratio and contact stress have an influence on the cycling number when the defect is removed and the remaining crack angle and depth.

Microstructure evolution of railway pearlitic wheel steels under rolling-sliding contact loading

Y. Hu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the microstructure evolution of railway pearlitic wheel materials under a rolling-sliding contact loading using various characterization techniques. The differences in microstructures of top layers of different wheel steels were explored, and the correlation between microstructure evolutions and wear and rolling contact fatigue behaviors was discussed. These findings can guide the development of premium railway wheel materials and assist in material selection.
