Coastal cliff erosion as a source of toxic, essential and nonessential metals in the marine environment

Magdalena Beldowska et al.

Summary: Due to the reduction in emissions and releases of pollutants, the remobilization of contaminants is gaining importance. The study found that coastal erosion may be an important source of metal pollutants, especially during the erosion of cliffs.

Improved interpretation of groundwater-surface water interactions along a stream reach using 3D high-resolution combined DC resistivity and induced polarization (DC-IP) geoelectrical imaging

Summary: This study demonstrates the value of DC-IP imaging, in both 3D and high-resolution, for characterizing streambed architecture and interpreting groundwater-surface water exchange patterns. It shows that DC-IP imaging can provide rapid, non-invasive, and continuous information on streambed lithology and its control on GW-SW exchanges, which has been underutilized in previous investigations.

Future rise of the Great Lakes water levels under climate change

Miraj B. Kayastha et al.

Summary: The Great Lakes' water levels are important for ecosystems, industries, and coastal processes. This study uses a three-dimensional regional climate modeling system to accurately simulate the hydrodynamics and thermal structure of the lakes and projects an increase in net basin supplies and average water levels in the future. However, there is uncertainty in climate projection.

Spatiotemporal controls on septic system derived nutrients in a nearshore aquifer and their discharge to a large lake

Sabina Rakhimbekova et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the behavior of septic system derived nutrients in a sandy nearshore aquifer and their discharge to a large lake, revealing the complex behavior of NO3-N and PO4-P in groundwater plumes. The study finds that septic systems along the Canadian Lake Erie shoreline are only a minor contributor to the annual P and N loads to the lake, but they may contribute to localized algal blooms in shoreline areas with high septic system density. The findings highlight the potential impact of nutrient inputs from septic systems on changing the N:P ratio in nearshore waters and promoting growth of harmful cyanobacteria.

Factors controlling phosphorus mobility in nearshore aquifers adjacent to large lakes

Sabina Rakhimbekova et al.

Summary: The study focused on the internal phosphorus storage mechanisms in offshore lakebed sediments and nearshore aquifer sediments. It found that phosphorus mobility in nearshore aquifers is closely linked to redox-driven iron cycling and that increased infiltration of alkaline surface water may promote phosphorus release from sediments. The study suggests that while current internal phosphorus storage mechanisms in nearshore aquifer sediments may limit phosphorus loads to lakes, there is a possibility of increased phosphorus loads in the future due to the buildup of phosphorus stores over time.

Summary: The accelerating sea level rise in Virginia poses significant threats to low-lying areas, including flooding, saltwater intrusion, and impacts on septic systems. While most adaptation efforts have focused on urban areas, rural regions face different challenges and require prioritization of data collection for effective adaptation measures.

Occurrence of Arsenic in Nearshore Aquifers Adjacent to Large Inland Lakes

Sabina Rakhimbekova et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the prevalence of pollutant sediment traps in nearshore aquifers adjacent to large lakes and focuses on the enrichment, transport, and release of arsenic. Field data from six sites along the Laurentian Great Lakes indicate widespread enrichment of arsenic in oxic nearshore aquifers, while arsenic is more mobile in reducing aquifers.
