Improved Regional Frequency Analysis of rainfall data

Philomene Le Gall et al.

Summary: Classifying and analyzing rainfall based on geographical features can improve the interpretation of rainfall patterns and the inference of return levels. This study proposes a fast and efficient clustering algorithm that relies solely on the available precipitation data, without the need for a priori selection of covariates. The algorithm is based on probability weighted moments commonly used in hydrology and is compliant with extreme value theory. It does not impose a parametric form on rainfall distributions and does not require thresholding or block maxima steps. The performance of the clustering algorithm is assessed through experiments and sensitivity analysis on cluster numbers. The algorithm is applied to daily precipitation data from 191 sites in Switzerland and the resulting homogeneous regions align with local orography, outperforming the classical regional frequency analysis approach based on normalized elevation and coordinates as covariates. Comparison of models based on the clustering outputs shows that a relatively simple model, with two clusters and a spatially varying scale parameter, can compete well against complex models.

Comprehensive space-time hydrometeorological simulations for estimating very rare floods at multiple sites in a large river basin

Daniel Viviroli et al.

Summary: This study explores the feasibility and reliability of the continuous simulation approach for estimating rare floods at multiple sites in a large river basin. The research shows that this approach, which links flood estimation with physical processes, is able to accurately represent meteorological and hydrological observations and provide meaningful information on low-probability floods.

Performance-based comparison of regionalization methods to improve the at-site estimates of daily precipitation

Abubakar Haruna et al.

Summary: In this article, the performance of three regionalization approaches in improving at-site estimates of daily precipitation is compared. The results show that all the regional methods offer improved robustness over the local model, with the GAM method being more reliable in the upper tail and the ROI method performing better in the bulk of the distribution.

Summary: In a warming climate with increased heavy rainfall, the importance of accurate rainfall statistics is growing. A Comparison of Moderate and Extreme ERA-5 Daily Precipitation With Two Observational Data Sets

Pauline Rivoire et al.

Summary: A comparison was made between ERA-5 reanalysis data and observational data sets EOBS and CMORPH regarding daily precipitation, revealing a decrease in co-occurrence with increasing precipitation intensity. ERA-5 and EOBS show better agreement in precipitation intensity over central Europe and disagreement in tropical areas.

Flexible and consistent quantile estimation for intensity-duration-frequency curves

Felix S. Fauer et al.

Summary: Assessing the relationship between intensity, duration, and frequency of extreme precipitation is crucial for water management system design. By using a duration-dependent formulation of the GEV distribution, a flexible model is developed to describe IDF relations over a wide range of durations.

Modeling seasonal variations of extreme rainfall on different timescales in Germany

Jana Ulrich et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the intensity of precipitation in summer months in Germany decreases more rapidly with duration, and there are significant differences between different months. Comparing the annual IDF curves obtained from monthly modeling with conventional methods shows that incorporating smooth variations throughout the year leads to a considerable reduction in uncertainties. In addition, deviations from the assumption of scale invariance were observed in some stations, resulting in a flattening of the IDF curves for longer durations.
