Sustainability of Regional Groundwater Quality in Response to Managed Aquifer Recharge

Zhilin Guo et al.

Summary: Growing demands on water supply have led to overexploitation of aquifers, resulting in a decline in groundwater quality. Managed aquifer recharge (MAR) has been proposed as a solution, but its effectiveness on improving regional groundwater quality caused by non-point sources is uncertain. This study used geostatistical and numerical models to investigate the impacts of different MAR strategies on groundwater quality, and found that strategic, high-intensity recharge operations in geologically favorable subregions can significantly improve groundwater quality in terms of salinity. However, it would take decades to alleviate groundwater quality concerns in the studied region.

Winter flooding recharges groundwater in almond orchards with limited effects on root dynamics and yield

Xiaochi Ma et al.

Summary: This study tested the impact of applying captured winter water runoff for groundwater recharge on tree performance in almond orchards in Northern California. The results showed that most of the water applied percolated past the root zones without any adverse effects on tree health and yield. Therefore, applying additional water in moderately drained to well-drained soils is not likely to have negative impacts on almond orchards.

Multi-Constrained Catchment Scale Optimization of Groundwater Abstraction Using Linear Programming

Mehrdis Danapour et al.

Summary: Due to increasing water demands, over-abstraction of groundwater can lead to declines in groundwater levels and reduce inflow to streams, impacting groundwater-dependent ecosystems. A holistic catchment-scale groundwater abstraction optimization framework was developed to consider the impacts of groundwater abstraction on streamflow and meet environmental flow criteria. An integrated model with linear programming optimization algorithm provides valuable information for water practitioners to design an effective groundwater abstraction plan.

A model for estimating Ag-MAR flooding duration based on crop tolerance, root depth, and soil texture data

Yonatan Ganot et al.

Summary: Agricultural Managed Aquifer Recharge (Ag-MAR) is an emerging technique that uses agricultural fields as percolation basins to recharge aquifers, but proper management is crucial to avoid harm to soil and crops. Root zone residence time (RZRT) is a key factor in Ag-MAR, as prolonged saturation can damage crops. A proposed model provides a way to estimate safe flooding duration for Ag-MAR based on hydraulic parameters and crop properties.

Critical Aquifer Overdraft Accelerates Degradation of Groundwater Quality in California's Central Valley During Drought

Zeno F. Levy et al.

Summary: This study found that long-term groundwater-level decline and water-quality degradation in California's Central Valley accelerate during drought periods and may briefly reverse during wetter periods. This suggests a direct linkage between climate, aquifer pumpage, and groundwater quality on a regional scale.
