Degradation of Organic Contaminants by Reactive Iron/Manganese Species: Progress and Challenges

Binbin Shao et al.

Summary: Many iron and manganese-based oxidation processes can generate reactive iron/manganese species with selective reactivity towards organic contaminants. However, the reaction mechanisms and occurrence of these species are complicated due to the involvement of multiple radical and nonradical species. This review focuses on the detection methods and roles of these species in the degradation of organic contaminants, as well as the influence of background constituents on the efficiency and byproduct formation of these oxidation processes. The prospects and challenges for future applications are also discussed.

Trace Analysis of Gases and Liquids with Spontaneous Raman Scattering Based on the Integrating Sphere Principle

Baokun Huang et al.

Summary: In this study, a simple and effective method was developed to enhance the signal of spontaneous Raman scattering from gases and liquids. By utilizing the principle of an integrating sphere, multiple pass actions of low-energy pump light and the collection of all Raman scattered light were achieved. The experimental results showed that our setup can significantly improve the detection limit for liquids compared to confocal Raman scattering spectroscopy.

Mechanistic Insights into the Markedly Decreased Oxidation Capacity of the Fe(II)/S2O82- Process with Increasing pH

Dandan Rao et al.

Summary: This study systematically evaluated the effect of pH on the oxidation capacity of the Fe(II)/S2O82- [Fe(II)/PDS] system and developed a mathematical model to quantify these effects. The results showed that the performance of the Fe(II)/PDS process declined significantly at pH > 3.0 due to the decrease in Fe(IV) contribution with increasing pH.

Interaction between Organic Compounds and Catalyst Steers the Oxidation Pathway and Mechanism in the Iron Oxide-Based Heterogeneous Fenton System

Lei Chen et al.

Summary: Extensive efforts have been made to understand the mechanistic details of various heterogeneous Fenton reactions. However, controversy still remains regarding the oxidation mechanism of different organic compounds in the classical iron oxide-based Fenton reaction due to the lack of consideration for the interaction between the organic compounds and the catalyst. This study investigated the interaction between ferrihydrite (Fhy) catalyst and different organic compounds, and found that the oxidation pathway and mechanism of the target compounds are largely influenced by this interaction.

NaOH-activated persulfate-assisted mechanochemical mechanism and removal of lindane from contaminated soil

Xiaohui Zhang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the PS-assisted MC degradation of lindane in contaminated soil, finding that NaOH performed better than CaO in assisting PS for mineralization. Under optimal conditions with PS:NaOH:lindane = 0.35:0.15:5, lindane degradation and mineralization were completed within 2 and 4 hours, respectively. ESR tests confirmed the generation of (OH)-O-center dot and SO4-center dot, indicating efficient lindane degradation in contaminated soil with PS activated by NaOH.
