Comparative chemical and non-contact bioleaching of ion-adsorption type rare earth ore using ammonium sulfate and metabolites of Aspergillus niger and Yarrowia lipolytica to rationalise the role of organic acids for sustainable processing

Li Shen et al.

Summary: Ion-adsorption type rare earth ore contains medium and heavy REEs, which are strategic mineral resources. Chemical leaching is restricted due to environmental concerns, while bioleaching shows promise. This study investigates the use of metabolites from Aspergillus niger and Yarrowia lipolytica to leach REEs, comparing them with ammonium sulfate. The results show that Aspergillus niger (glucose as carbon source) achieved the highest leaching efficiency of 91%, followed by Aspergillus niger (sucrose as carbon source) with 66%, and Yarrowia lipolytica with only 34%. The findings are relevant for the future development of ion-adsorption type rare earth ore.

A critical review on chemical analysis of heavy metal complexes in water/wastewater and the mechanism of treatment methods

Zhe Xu et al.

Summary: Efficient mitigation of toxic and recalcitrant heavy metal complexes from water and wastewater is critical, but still faces challenges due to the complicated heavy metal speciation that masks the coordination circumstance. The review presents methods for HMC elimination and underscores the importance of characterizing heavy metal complexes for understanding their speciation distribution.

Decomplexation of Ni(II)-citrate and recovery of nickel from chelated nickel containing electroplating wastewater by peroxymonosulfate with nickel

Ying Lu et al.

Summary: In this study, Ni(II) was used as an activator for PMS to decomplex Ni(II)-citrate and chelated nickel in electroless nickel plating wastewater. The presence of co-existed substances had different effects on the decomplexation efficiency, and primary reactive species involved in the process were identified. Nickel recovery was successfully achieved through adsorption coupled with electrodeposition.

Column leaching of ion adsorption rare earth ore at low ammonium concentration

Qiyuan Shi et al.

Summary: This study utilizes ammonium citrate as a new leaching agent for ion adsorption rare earth ore (IARE-ore) leaching, aiming to reduce the concentration of leaching agent and improve the recovery rate of rare earth elements (REEs). The results indicate that high REEs recovery can be achieved at relatively low ammonium concentration using ammonium citrate, and both the cation and anion components of ammonium citrate contribute to the leaching process.

Simulated bioleaching of ion-adsorption rare earth ore using metabolites of biosynthetic citrate: An alternative to cation exchange leaching

Xiaoyu Meng et al.

Summary: Ion-adsorption rare earth ore (IRE-ore) is a strategic resource that satisfies almost all market demand for heavy rare elements. The commonly used ammonium sulfate technology has environmental drawbacks, leading to challenges for the IRE-ore industry. Bioleaching, with its low cost and eco-friendliness, presents potential prospects for the clean and efficient utilization of IRE-ore. This study found that Aspergillus niger and Yarrowia lipolytica, along with citrate as the main microbial metabolite, were effective in bioleaching IRE-ore.

Optimization of rare earth carbonate reactive-crystallization process based on response surface method

Dongmei Zhu et al.

Summary: This study focused on optimizing the reactive-crystallization process of rare earth carbonate using a response surface central composite design method. The concentration of mother liquor, aging time, and seed crystal dosage were found to have a significant impact on the particle size of rare earth carbonate, with mother liquor concentration having the most influence. The established response surface model showed a good prediction effect and practical significance in guiding the reactive-crystallization process.

Generation of a Gluconobacter oxydans knockout collection for improved extraction of rare earth elements

Alexa M. Schmitz et al.

Summary: Researchers developed a whole-genome knockout collection of mutants for Gluconobacter oxydans, identifying genes influencing the efficacy of rare earth element bioleaching. Disruption of genes related to Pyrroloquinoline Quinone synthesis and glucose dehydrogenase significantly reduces bioleaching, while disruption of phosphate-specific transport system genes enhances bioleaching efficiency. This study offers a roadmap for engineering G. oxydans' genome to improve bioleaching efficiency.
