Microbial community characterization in advanced water reclamation for potable reuse

Tatiana C. Guarin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the microbial community structure and composition in advanced water reclamation for potable reuse applications. It found that certain phyla, such as Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria, were dominant in both treatment steps. Additionally, eight potential bacterial pathogens were identified. Detailed studies on microbial communities are crucial for understanding process performance and ensuring public health protection.

Dissolved organic carbon affects the occurrence of deep chlorophyll peaks and zooplankton resource use and biomass

Joseph A. Tonin et al.

Summary: Concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) are increasing in lakes worldwide, which has significant effects on zooplankton. Deep chlorophyll maxima (DCMs) occur in lakes with lower DOC concentrations and provide an important resource for zooplankton. The increase in DOC can suppress zooplankton by affecting both resource quality and the availability of metalimnetic phytoplankton resources.

Landscape of mobile genetic elements and their antibiotic resistance cargo in prokaryotic genomes

Supriya Khedkar et al.

Summary: Prokaryotic Mobile Genetic Elements (MGEs) play important roles in evolution and the spread of antibiotic resistance. However, current understanding of their global dispersal is limited. In this study, a computational framework was developed to capture different MGE types and their cargos, allowing for a better understanding of MGE dispersal. The findings were integrated into a resource, providing a valuable tool for future research on the mobile part of genomes and its horizontal dispersal.

Ozonation of organic compounds in water and wastewater: A critical review

Sungeun Lim et al.

Summary: Ozonation has a long history in water treatment and has been used for disinfection and oxidation of pollutants. In recent years, it has been increasingly applied for enhanced municipal wastewater treatment and water reuse. The research on ozonation has contributed to a better understanding of the removal efficiency of organic contaminants and the formation of transformation products.

Transboundary intercellular communications between Penicillium and bacterial communities during sludge bulking: Inspirations on quenching fungal dominance

Zhixuan Feng et al.

Summary: Fungal bulking can be controlled by regulating intercellular communication between fungi and bacteria. In this study, three signal molecules related to Penicillium fungal bulking under low-pH stress were identified. The addition of these molecules successfully inhibited mycelial formation and improved the settleability of activated sludge. Transcriptome analysis revealed the regulation of genes related to signal transduction, mycelium synthesis, and metabolic pathways.

Hydroxyl radicals can significantly influence the toxicity of ofloxacin transformation products during ozonation

Yide He et al.

Summary: Ozonation is commonly used to remove recalcitrant contaminants in water, but the toxicity of transformation products (TPs) generated from ozone and hydroxyl radicals (center dot OH) reactions has not been well studied. This research investigated the degradation of the antibiotic OFX under different Rct values (the exposure ratio of center dot OH to O3) and found that TPs formed at high-Rct conditions were less toxic. The study suggests that center dot OH may be more efficient in eliminating the toxicity of OFX than ozone.

Transboundary intercellular communications between Penicillium and bacterial communities during sludge bulking: Inspirations on quenching fungal dominance

Zhixuan Feng et al.

Summary: Fungal bulking is caused by an evolution towards a fungi-dominant unbalanced sludge system, with fungi competing against bacterial cells. Cross-kingdom intercellular communication between fungi and bacteria may be an internal driving force for stimulating fungal bulking. Lowering pH increases Penicillium abundance but washes out some functional bacterial genera.

Interplay between reactive oxygen and nitrogen species in living organisms

Volodymyr Lushchak et al.

Summary: In living organisms, most oxygen is reduced to water through four-electron reduction, but a small percentage is reduced through one-electron mechanisms to produce reactive oxygen and nitrogen species. These species interact with various components of living organisms, leading to diverse effects on biological systems.

Advanced oxidation of benzalkonium chloride in aqueous media under ozone and ozone/UV systems ? Degradation kinetics and toxicity evaluation

Xiaobin Yu et al.

Summary: The study found that the O3/UV treatment can efficiently degrade DDBAC without requiring high pH and high O3 dosage. Pseudo-first-order reaction kinetics were applicable for all process conditions. In O3 treatment, ?OH radicals contribute to DDBAC oxidation, while in O3/UV treatment, the combined effects of ?OH radicals and UV photolysis are responsible.

Rethinking water treatment targets: Bacteria regrowth under unprovable conditions

Nuno F. F. Moreira et al.

Summary: Ozonation is an effective technology for removing contaminants from urban wastewater, but regrowth of bacteria may occur after storage due to the surviving cells' ability to adapt to nutrient-poor environments. Analysis of antibiotic resistance genes in ozonated wastewater highlights the need for wastewater treatment technologies to consider the potential imbalance of bacterial communities and presence of antibiotic resistance genes.

Intestinal Cetobacterium and acetate modify glucose homeostasis via parasympathetic activation in zebrafish

Anran Wang et al.

Summary: Fish have limited capability to utilize carbohydrates compared to mammals. In this study, zebrafish fed with omnivorous and herbivorous diets showed better glucose homeostasis due to enrichment of the commensal bacterium Cetobacterium somerae, which produces acetate. Dietary supplementation of acetate promotes glucose utilization in zebrafish, and the beneficial effect of acetate and C. somerae on glucose homeostasis is mediated through parasympathetic activation. These findings suggest potential strategies for improving fish carbohydrate utilization.
