Responses of microbial interactions to elevated salinity in activated sludge microbial community

Summary: Biological treatment processes play a crucial role in sewage purification, and microbial interactions have a significant impact on treatment performance. This study investigated the microbial interactions in an activated sludge system under elevated salinity using association network analysis. The results showed that higher salinity led to lower microbial diversity and more competitive overall networks, resulting in reduced treatment process efficiency. The subnetworks of major phyla and functional bacteria differed significantly under elevated salinity, with Nitrosomonas making a greater contribution to nitrification and denitrifiers establishing more cooperative relationships to resist salinity stress. Keystone species crucial for process stability were found to be dynamic and less abundant under salinity disturbance. This study deepened our understanding of microbial interactions in activated sludge systems under elevated salinity.

The dissimilarity of antibiotic and quorum sensing inhibitor on activated sludge nitrification system: Microbial communities and antibiotic resistance genes

Summary: This study investigated the effects of antibiotics and quorum sensing inhibitor combined pollution with copper on bacterial/archaeal community antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in activated sludge system. The results showed that antibiotics and quorum sensing inhibitor had different inhibitory effects on microbial diversity and composition, as well as metabolism. Furthermore, specific denitrifying bacteria were enriched under the influence of antibiotics and quorum sensing inhibitor, but they had antagonistic effects on the proliferation of ARGs.

Summary: Biofilms were found to enhance the survival of Tetragenococcus halophilus in high-salt fermented foods production under various stresses, including ethanol stress. The study revealed that biofilms could protect cell membrane and wall from damage under ethanol stress and change the characteristic of Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). RNA-seq and iTRAQ analyses revealed differential gene and protein expressions in biofilms and planktonic cells with or without ethanol treatment, which were involved in biosynthesis and stress tolerance. This study contributes to understanding biofilm formation and the role of bacterial biofilms in stress tolerance.
