Biodegradation of microplastics: Better late than never

Saba Miri et al.

Summary: Plastic use is expanding, especially in the form of microplastics, which are posing a global threat to ecosystems and human health. Current research focuses on biotechnological methods for removing microplastics, but further studies are needed to develop more effective strategies.

Tracing microplastics from raw water to drinking water treatment plants in Busan, South Korea

Jae-Won Jung et al.

Summary: This study investigated the presence and removal efficiency of microplastics (MPs) in Korean drinking water treatment plants. The results showed that the number of MPs was higher in river sites compared to reservoir sites, with minimal differences during June to October. The main types of MPs found in raw water were polyethylene (PE)/polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA).

Airborne microplastic concentrations and deposition across the Weser River catchment

Sarmite Kernchen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the presence of microplastics (MP) in the atmosphere of the Weser River catchment area in Germany and found that MP is ubiquitous in the air. The study showed that proximity to cities increases the abundance of MP in the atmosphere, and atmospheric MP significantly contributes to the contamination of both aquatic and terrestrial habitats.

Weathering and fragmentation of plastic debris in the ocean environment

Anthony L. Andrady

Summary: The fragmentation of plastic macro-debris into microplastics is mainly caused by extensive oxidation under solar UV radiation. The heterogeneity in oxidative potential leads to a bias in weathering and fragmentation in different marine zones. Microplastics found in seawater are more likely to originate from beaches or land, rather than from weathering of floating plastics.

Microplastic pollution in the Weser estuary and the German North Sea

Lisa Roscher et al.

Summary: This study investigated the presence and distribution of microplastics (MP) in the estuary and lower stretch of the Weser River in Germany, finding highest concentrations in the 11-500 micron size range with the polymer cluster acrylates/PUR/varnish being dominant. Estimated MP concentrations generally increased in the Turbidity Maximum Zone (TMZ) and decreased towards the open sea, providing valuable insights for future MP monitoring measures.

Flocculation of PVC Microplastic and Fine-Grained Cohesive Sediment at Environmentally Realistic Concentrations

Thorbjoern Joest Andersen et al.

Summary: Microplastic particles are widespread in aquatic environments and can easily flocculate with natural sediment, settling at a faster rate than individual particles. This continuous sedimentation of microplastics in estuarine and marine environments increases the microplastic loading for benthic organisms.

Microplastic Mass Concentrations and Distribution in German Bight Waters by Pyrolysis-Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry/Thermochemolysis Reveal Potential Impact of Marine Coatings: Do Ships Leave Skid Marks?

Christopher Dibke et al.

Summary: This study is the first large-scale survey of microplastics in the German Bight, revealing spatial, temporal, and potential source variations of microplastics in marine environments. The main source of microplastics is hypothesized to be marine (antifouling) coating particles from ships, rather than common packaging waste.
