A novel strategy for rapid development of a self-sustaining symbiotic algal-bacterial granular sludge: Applying algal-mycelial pellets as nuclei

Bing Zhang et al.

Summary: This study proposed a novel strategy using algal-mycelial pellets (AMPs) as primary nuclei to accelerate the development of a self-sustaining symbiotic ABGS system. The results showed that this strategy significantly shortened the granulation time and resulted in an ABGS with excellent performance in wastewater treatment.

Multiple-perspective research on the spatial distribution of full-size aerobic granular sludge in wastewater treatment

Peng Tang et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of aerobic granular sludge (AGS) with different particle sizes and found that AGS with a size of 2-3 mm exhibited the best mass transfer performance, pore distribution, and specific surface area. Digital holographic microscopy and confocal laser scanning microscopy confirmed the high bacterial activity and distribution of extracellular polymeric substances in the 2-3 mm AGS.

Quantitative analysis of the surficial and adhesion properties of the Gram-negative bacterial species Comamonas testosteroni modulated by c-di-GMP

Shanshan Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of modulating c-di-GMP levels on the physical-chemical properties and adhesion characteristics of Comamonas testosteroni WDL7. High c-di-GMP levels promoted secretion of specific extracellular polysaccharides and proteins that enhanced bacterial adhesion, while reducing c-di-GMP concentrations significantly decreased bacterial adhesion, possibly due to flagellum-accelerated mobility. These results contribute to a better understanding of the role of c-di-GMP in regulating bacterial biofilm development.
