Phytotoxic effects of microcystins, anatoxin-a and cylindrospermopsin to aquatic plants: A meta-analysis

Yanyan Zhang et al.

Summary: The study conducted a comprehensive meta-analysis on the phytotoxic effects of anatoxin-a, cylindrospermopsin, and microcystins on 34 species of aquatic plants, finding that most aquatic plants were negatively affected by cyanotoxin exposure. However, certain plants displayed marginal stimulation under low concentrations. Anatoxin-a showed the highest bioaccumulation capacity in aquatic plants compared to other cyanotoxins.

Gene expression pattern of microbes associated with large cyanobacterial colonies for a whole year in Lake Taihu

Limei Shi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the community composition and metabolism patterns of microbes inhabiting large cyanobacterial colonies. The results showed that Cyanobacteria and associated bacteria had different response patterns to water nutrient conditions. Metatranscriptomic data revealed that the gene expression patterns of the most active bacteria were influenced by chlorophyll a concentrations. Network analysis showed coordinated transcriptional patterns between Cyanobacteria and Proteobacteria. These findings provide insights into the metabolic processes of microbes in large cyanobacterial colonies, which are important for the understanding and management of year-round cyanobacterial blooms.

Cyanopeptides restriction and degradation co-mediate microbiota assembly during a freshwater cyanobacterial harmful algal bloom (CyanoHAB)

Han Gao et al.

Summary: Cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (CyanoHABs) are intensifying globally and are affected by climate change and eutrophication. This study investigates the role of cyanopeptides, bioactive secondary metabolites of cyanobacteria, in microbiota assembly and ecosystem function. The study finds that cyanopeptides, particularly those beyond microcystins, negatively impact microbiota diversity and exert potential collective eco-toxicities. In addition, cyanopeptides have a stronger influence on microbial communities than nutrients during CyanoHABs. Cyanopeptide restriction and degradation are identified as the deterministic drivers of community assembly.

Spatiotemporal changes of bacterial communities during a cyanobacterial bloom in a subtropical water source reservoir ecosystem in China

Zhenhua Huang et al.

Summary: Cyanobacterial blooms have a significant impact on the diversity and composition of aquatic microbial communities. This study used high-throughput sequencing to investigate the spatiotemporal variation of cyanobacterial and bacterial communities during different bloom phases in upstream rivers of a eutrophicated water source reservoir. The results showed that both cyanobacterial and bacterial diversities were significantly lower during the bloom outbreak phase. Changes in the relative abundance of dominant cyanobacterial and bacterial taxa were observed along with the bloom. The study also found distinct community compositions among different bloom phases and revealed spatial variations of microbial communities. These findings contribute to our understanding of the spatiotemporal variations of microbial communities caused by cyanobacterial blooms and provide insights for controlling blooms in similar aquatic ecosystems.

Haley E. Plaas et al.

Summary: The global spread of harmful cyanobacterial blooms poses a threat to public health due to the production of cyanotoxins. Understanding human exposure through inhalation is challenging, particularly in freshwater systems. Further research is needed to investigate the impact of cyanotoxins on human respiratory health.

Phytotoxicity and bioconcentration of microcystins in agricultural plants: Meta-analysis and risk assessment

Yanyan Zhang et al.

Summary: Microcystins are highly phytotoxic to durum wheat, corn, white mustard, and garden cress, while leafy vegetables may bioconcentrate more microcystins in their edible parts. Human health risks from ingesting microcystins may be greater for leafy vegetables, but further research is needed to confirm bioconcentration levels in realistic environments.
