Using colloidal AFM probe technique and XDLVO theory to predict the transport of nanoplastics in porous media

Li-Juan Feng et al.

Summary: The plastic concentration in terrestrial systems is much higher than that in marine ecosystems, leading to concerns about their impact on agricultural sustainability. Previous research on nanoplastic transport in soil relied on qualitative predictions, but lacked direct measurements of interfacial forces. This study conducted multiscale investigations and found that amino-modified nanoplastics were more mobile than carboxyl-modified nanoplastics. The transport of both types of nanoplastics was influenced by ionic strength and pH. Hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity-mediated interactions and particle heterogeneity interfered with interfacial forces, contradicting the qualitative predictions of existing theory. The combination of theory and atomic force microscopy can provide valuable insights into the fate of nanoparticles in soil.

Marine microalgal biofilm development and its adhesion propensities on commercial membrane via XDLVO approach

C. Y. Tong et al.

Summary: An emerging biofilm immobilization method has facilitated the easy and economically viable harvesting of microbial biomass. However, the limited understanding of the interaction between the biofilm and microporous membranes has hindered the widespread adoption of this technology. This study investigated the cell attachment kinetics of three marine diatoms and quantified the changes in extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) released during cultivation. By employing thermodynamics and the XDLVO theory, the authors shed light on the cell-substratum interactions and provided fundamental knowledge about biofilm formation in porous substrate bioreactors.

Dissecting the role of membrane defects with low-energy barrier on fouling development through A collision Attachment-Monte Carlo approach

Junxia Liu et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the influence of membrane defects on fouling through simulations. The results show that membrane defects significantly affect fouling by influencing the interaction between foulants and the membrane. Under certain energy barrier conditions, membrane defects can accelerate foulant deposition and shorten or eliminate the metastable period of the membrane.

Evaluation of the fouling potential of sludge in a membrane bioreactor integrated with microbial fuel cell

Hui Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the fouling characteristics of sludge in a membrane bioreactor integrated with microbial fuel cell (MFC-MBR) to understand the mechanisms of membrane fouling mitigation. The results showed that the combination of MFC-MBR system could decrease the adhesion energies between SMPs and membrane, leading to lower potential of membrane fouling.

New insights into membrane fouling formation during ultrafiltration of organic wastewater with high salinity

Weiwei Cai et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that high concentration NaCl significantly exacerbated the formation of HA fouling, while mitigating the development of BSA fouling. Under high salinity conditions, there was a substantial increase in electrostatic attraction and thermodynamic interactions between HA-HA and HA-membrane.

The design of multi-stage open-loop hollow fiber membrane contactor and its application in ammonia capture from hydrolyzed human urine

Junhui Zhang et al.

Summary: The study proposed a method to design a multi-stage HFMC and designed a three-stage HFMC for capturing ammonia from urine. The experimental results demonstrated the feasibility and accuracy of the design method, indicating that HFMC could be a potential choice for recovering ammonia from high concentration ammonium nitrogen wastewater.

Modelling the critical roles of zeta potential and contact angle on colloidal fouling with a coupled XDLVO - collision attachment approach

Junxia Liu et al.

Summary: The model predicts that severe fouling occurs at low ζ(2) values, and increasing ζ(2) can significantly reduce the membrane fouling rate. The role of contact angle θ is critical, as fouling is dramatically reduced when θ is below (or above) a certain threshold value.

Ammonia capture from human urine to harvest liquid N-P compound fertilizer by a submerged hollow fiber membrane contactor: Performance and fertilizer analysis

Junhui Zhang et al.

Summary: The study developed a HFMC technology to recover ammonia from human urine to produce compound N-P fertilizers. The research showed that increasing H3PO4 concentration did not significantly affect the ammonia capture performance but did affect water vapor transfer and fertilizer components. The liquid fertilizers can be used in soils or plants with high demand for phosphorus.
