Pesticide concentrations in agricultural storm drainage inlets of a small Swiss catchment

Urs T. Schoenenberger et al.

Summary: This study validates the impact of agricultural storm drainage inlets on surface runoff and pesticide transport through field measurements. The results show that these inlets can significantly increase pesticide concentrations in surface waters and transport substantial pesticide loads into streams.

Pesticides are the dominant stressors for vulnerable insects in lowland streams

Matthias Liess et al.

Summary: Agricultural nonpointsource pesticide pollution is a major driver in reducing vulnerable insect populations in aquatic invertebrate communities, exceeding the relevance of other anthropogenic stressors. The current authorization of pesticides underestimates the actual ecological risk and needs to include monitoring-derived information on pesticide effects at the ecosystem level for adequate environmental quality objectives.

Environmental Risk of Pesticides for Fish in Small- and Medium-Sized Streams of Switzerland

Inge Werner et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the acute and chronic risk of pesticides, alone and in mixtures, for fish in Swiss streams between 2012 and 2018. It found that certain pesticides posed risks to fish health, especially pyrethroid insecticides, fungicides, and pesticide mixtures, at environmental concentrations.

Small streams-large concentrations? Pesticide monitoring in small agricultural streams in Germany during dry weather and rainfall

Katharina Halbach et al.

Summary: The study reveals that small streams are significantly exposed to agricultural pesticides, with most pesticides concentrations exceeding regulatory acceptable levels. The detection frequency of pesticides is related to sales quantity and half-lives in water. The results suggest that current authorization and risk mitigation methods are insufficient to protect small streams from pesticide contamination.
