Density-modification displacement using colloidal biliquid aphron for entrapped DNAPL contaminated aquifer remediation

Chaoge Yang et al.

Summary: This study found that colloidal biliquid aphron (CBLA) can effectively remove and reduce the density of tetrachloroethylene (PCE). Under suitable injection conditions, the mass of retained PCE was less than 1% and the density of PCE in the effluent was lower than that of water. The reaction between CBLA and PCE formed an emulsified and dissolved phase, and demulsifier solution injection resulted in the formation of a light nonaqueous phase liquid (LNAPL) phase. Phase analysis played an important role in monitoring the changes in concentration and density of PCE. Compared to surfactant flushing, the density modification displacement technique using CBLA significantly reduced the mass of residual PCE and eliminated the risk of downward migration. This study is important for the remediation of entrapped nonaqueous phase liquids in contaminated aquifers.

Glycerol carbonate structuring in aqueous solutions as inferred from mutual diffusion coefficient, density and viscosity measurements in the temperature range 283.15-313.15 K

Nadia Valletti et al.

Summary: Glycerol Carbonate (GC) is an emerging green reactant with high reactivity and easy synthesis from glycerol, making it attractive for many organic chemistry applications. However, the transport properties of GC, especially the diffusion coefficient in water, have been poorly studied. In this study, the diffusion coefficient of GC in water was measured for the first time, and its hydrodynamic radius and aggregate structure in aqueous solutions were investigated. The findings contribute to the understanding of GC's fate in the environment and its potential applications in aqueous media.

Comparison of thermal and chemical enhanced recovery of DNAPL in saturated porous media: 2D tank pumping experiments and two-phase flow modelling

S. Colombano et al.

Summary: Pumping experiments were conducted in a 2D tank to estimate the recovery yield of pure heavy chlorinated organic compounds by varying parameters such as permeability, flow rates, surfactant addition, and temperature. Chemical enhancement with SDBS significantly increased DNAPL recovery rates, while thermal enhancement had no beneficial effect. The study demonstrates the accuracy of determining water and DNAPL saturations by image interpretation and modeling in laboratory tests.

Chemo-hydrodynamic pulsations in simple batch A + B → C systems

Marcello A. Budroni et al.

Summary: Spatio-temporal oscillations can be induced in batch conditions without nonlinear chemical feedback, thanks to the interplay between chemical processes and chemically driven hydrodynamic flows. The reactor height plays a critical role in controlling the dynamics, with the Marangoni convective rolls determining the critical conditions and properties of the oscillations. The oscillations are essentially hydrodynamic, with chemical processes triggering Marangoni flows that are unstable towards oscillatory instabilities.
