Systematic review of preclinical studies on the neutrophil-mediated immune response to air pollutants, 1980-2020

Andres Valderrama et al.

Summary: This study systematically reviewed the preclinical evidence on the neutrophil-mediated response to air pollutants. The findings revealed that research in this field has been scattered and heterogeneous. The study identified 100 different preclinical models, 10 pollutants, and 11 immunological outcomes related to neutrophil response to air pollutants. Mechanisms of neutrophils-mediated immunopathology include cellular activation, ROS production, and proinflammatory effects, leading to cell-death, oxidative stress, and inflammatory infiltrates in lungs.

Viral respiratory infections and air pollutants

Summary: Air pollution is a global public health issue and a risk factor for cardiorespiratory diseases. Exposure to air pollutants can induce inflammatory responses and increase the risk of respiratory viral infections. More research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms and guide decisions for controlling respiratory infections.

Particulate matter (PM10) induces in vitro activation of human neutrophils, and lung histopathological alterations in a mouse model

Andres Valderrama et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effect of exposure to particulate matter (PM10) on the neutrophil-mediated inflammatory response and found that PM10 induced cytotoxicity in neutrophils and increased the release of ROS, IL-8, MPO, NE, and NETs. Neutrophil infiltration and inflammatory responses were also observed in animal models. These results suggest that PM10 may activate neutrophils and contribute to lung inflammation, exacerbating respiratory pathologies.

A look beyond the priority: A systematic review of the genotoxic, mutagenic, and carcinogenic endpoints of non-priority PAHs*

Francisco Carlos da Silva Junior et al.

Summary: The systematic review found evidence of genotoxic, mutagenic, and carcinogenic endpoints in 13 US EPA non-priority PAHs. Some of the PAHs, such as 5-MC, 7,12-DMBA, CPP, and Db [al]P, have been extensively studied and shown to have mutagenic effects and potential carcinogenicity. More research is needed to improve future protocols for environmental analysis and risk assessment in populations with high exposure to these PAHs.
