Predisposing factors for person-to-person transmission of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome bunyavirus

Summary: This study reports an outbreak of nosocomial person-to-person transmission of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV). Among individuals who had face-to-face contact distance <= 50 cm and/or exposure time >= 30 min with the index patient, a higher infection rate was observed. High viral load, presence of bloody secretions and bleeding, exposure time, and distance were identified as key factors in person-to-person transmission.

Summary: SFTSV, the causative agent of SFTS, is maintained in cycles involving ticks and wild animal hosts, but direct transmission from cats and dogs to humans has been identified in Japan. A survey in Miyazaki prefecture revealed a seropositivity rate of 2.2% among small-animal-practice workers, higher than that in healthy blood donors. Enhancing awareness of biosafety at animal hospitals is crucial for SFTSV control.
