Evaluation of Ag@TiO2/WO3 heterojunction photocatalyst for enhanced photocatalytic activity towards methylene blue degradation

Bablu Basumatary et al.

Summary: Methylene blue degradation in wastewater was achieved effectively through the photocatalytic activity of Ag@TiO2/WO3 nanocomposite, which was prepared by a modified sol-gel precipitation route. The enhanced photocatalytic performance was attributed to reduced bandgap, improved charge carrier transfer efficiency, and plasmonic sensitization of Ag, resulting in a 25 times higher degradation rate compared to commercial DP25 photocatalyst under visible light.

Tailoring superhydrophilicity and photocatalysis of sputter deposited TiO2/ WO3 thin films on super white glass by process and chemical composition optimization

Sheng-Kuei Chiu et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the deposition of TiO2/WO3 nanocomposite thin films onto super white glass and explores the optimization of photocatalytic performance through processing controls and adjustments of the film's chemical composition. The results demonstrate the fabrication of an anatase-dominated, mesoporous coating that exhibits the highest level of superhydrophilicity and photocatalysis, making it suitable for self-cleaning cover glass applications. The mechanism behind the superior photoactivity of this film is clarified through atomic-scaled analyses.

In-situ annealing transmission electron microscopy of plasmonic thin films composed of bimetallic Au-Ag nanoparticles dispersed in a TiO2 matrix

Diogo Costa et al.

Summary: This study focused on the characterization of plasmonic thin films composed of Au-Ag nanoparticles dispersed in a TiO2 dielectric matrix and compared them with the monometallic Au/TiO2 plasmonic system. Thermal treatment induced Localized Surface Plasmon Resonances (LSPRs) in both systems, with Au-Ag/TiO2 showing a wider LSPR response due to the broader size distribution of nanoparticles. Additionally, the study demonstrated the potential of plasmonic Au-Ag/TiO2 thin films as refractive index sensors when in contact with different dielectric media.

Dense Ti0.67Hf0.33B1.7 thin films grown by hybrid HfB2-HiPIMS/TiB2-DCMS co-sputtering without external heating

Babak Bakhit et al.

Summary: This study presents a synthesis method for growing high-hardness Ti0.67Hf0.33B1.7 thin films on Al2O3 substrates at low substrate temperatures, without the need for external heating. Utilizing a hybrid high-power impulse and dc magnetron co-sputtering technique, the growth of dense films is promoted by heavy-mass ion (Hf+) irradiation to compensate for limited atomic mobility at low temperatures.

Summary: To meet the growing demand for sustainable development, reducing energy consumption during thin film growth through magnetron sputtering is crucial. Low-temperature growth of dense, hard coatings is also necessary to protect temperature-sensitive substrates. A novel method using metal ion irradiation to facilitate adatom mobility and achieve high-quality dense films at substrate temperatures not exceeding 130 degrees C has been developed, showing promising results in terms of film properties and energy efficiency.
