Fracture behavior of laser powder bed fusion fabricated Ti41Nb via in-situ alloying

Sheng Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the microstructures and mechanical properties of in-situ alloyed Ti41Nb fabricated using laser powder bed fusion (LB-PBF). It was found that a small hatch spacing and fast scanning strategy could minimize porosity and unmelted Nb particle combination. The fabricated blocks had a mesostructure consisting of columnar grains and alternating Nb-poor regions (NPRs), along with extensive iso precipitates. The FCG rate was influenced by the NPR layers and the local slip systems, while the K IC exhibited significant anisotropy due to crack deflection by the NPR/matrix interfaces. Despite its low ductility, the mesostructure-induced toughening mechanism improved the fracture toughness of the alloy.

Effect of hot isostatic pressing on the cast Ti6Al4V alloy with shrinkage cavities inside: Healing behavior, microstructure evolution and tensile property

Qian Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the healing behavior, microstructure evolution, and tensile properties of a cast Ti6Al4V alloy with millimeter-scale shrinkage cavities during hot isostatic pressing (HIP). X-ray computed tomography (CT) was used to track the closure process of pores during HIP. The results showed that HIP has the potential to close the shrinkage cavities and the main closure mechanism is plastic deformation. The microstructure analysis revealed the rotation of crystalline lattice and the breakdown of alpha lamellae during HIP. The study also found that HIP treatment improved metallurgical bonding and enhanced the tensile properties.

A Comparative Study of Microstructures and Mechanical Behavior of Laser Metal Deposited and Electron Beam Melted Ti-6Al-4V

Mehmood Rashid et al.

Summary: The microstructures and mechanical properties of Ti-6Al-4V fabricated using laser metal deposition (LMD) and electron beam melting (EBM) were compared, showing that LMD samples have superior hardness, strength and work hardening exponent (n), while EBM samples are more ductile. The differences in mechanical behavior of the two samples originate from their distinct dislocation densities within alpha and the relative proportions of Widmanstatten and colony type arrangements of the alpha+beta laths.

Enhanced corrosion resistance of the surface modified Ti-13Nb-13Zr alloy by ultrasonic shot peening

Pramod Kumar et al.

Summary: The corrosion resistance of the near-beta Ti-13Nb-13Zr alloy was improved by ultrasonic shot peening treatment, primarily due to grain refinement and the increase in compressive residual stresses in the surface region. Passivation was most prominent after 30 seconds of USSP treatment, decreasing with longer durations.

Summary: The study found that the monolithic BCC crystalline phase and amorphous phase have high yield strains due to small length scale effects, but undergo negligible post-yield elongation before failure. However, the ductility of the bilaminate composite is significantly higher when the thickness of its amorphous portion is <100 nm.

The formation mechanism of (001) preferred orientation for anatase TiO2 film prepared by DC pulsed magnetron sputtering

Yi Zhang et al.

Summary: TiO2 films were deposited using DC pulsed magnetron sputtering with different sputtering power density, followed by annealing at 600 degrees C to obtain anatase TiO2 films. XPS results showed consistent Ti/O atom ratio in all films. XRD results indicated clear anatase (001) preferred orientation in films deposited with certain SPD. TEM results revealed the microstructure of annealed TiO2 films with anatase (001) orientation. AFM results showed nano-size anatase crystal nuclei with dominated diffusion effect in film growth. During annealing, the nuclei coalesced into large anatase grains maintaining crystal orientation.

Surface pre-treatments of Ti-Nb-Zr-Ta beta titanium alloy: The effect of chemical, electrochemical and ion sputter etching on morphology, residual stress, corrosion stability and the MG-63 cell response

Petr Vlcak et al.

Summary: Pre-treatment methods play a crucial role in modifying surface properties and cell response of titanium alloys. Chemical and electrochemical treatments induce significant morphological changes, while surface chemistry dictates changes in contact angle. The presence of native oxides and suboxides contributes to high corrosion stability, while ion sputter etching leads to reduced corrosion resistance.

Development of corrosion-resistant and hydrophobic coating on commercially pure titanium

Manojkumar Palanivel et al.

Summary: This study focused on developing hydrophobic coatings on commercially pure titanium, using a two-step process involving plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) and post-treatment with stearic/myristic acid. The research showed that the type of acid and duration of treatment significantly influenced the hydrophobicity of the surface. The post-acid treatment modified the oxide coatings on the titanium surface, resulting in improved wettability and resistance to corrosion.
