Cost-effectiveness of Robotic-Assisted Radical Prostatectomy for Localized Prostate Cancer in the UK

Muhieddine Labban et al.

Summary: This study compares the cost-effectiveness of different surgical techniques for radical prostatectomy in the UK. The results show that robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) is a cost-effective option compared to open radical prostatectomy (ORP) and laparoscopic-assisted radical prostatectomy (LRP). RARP had lower costs and higher quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs) compared to LRP, and although it had higher costs than ORP, the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) was below the willingness-to-pay threshold, making RARP more cost-effective than ORP in the UK.

Patient characteristics predicting prolonged length of hospital, stay following robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy

Albert El Hajj et al.

Summary: The study aims to identify preoperative patient characteristics predicting prolonged length of hospital stay (pLOS) after robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP). Factors such as low body mass index, smoking, dependent functional status, heart failure, dialysis dependence, and predisposition to bleeding were found to be predictors of pLOS. Postoperative complications like bleeding, renal issues, and pulmonary complications were also associated with prolonged hospitalization.

A 5-Item Frailty Index for Predicting Morbidity and Mortality After Radical Prostatectomy: An Analysis of the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program Database

Mohammed Shahait et al.

Summary: The study revealed that a simple 5-item frailty index score can predict surgical outcomes post radical prostatectomy. Patients with a higher frailty index score are more likely to experience adverse events and early mortality.

The impact of resource limitations on care delivery and outcomes: routine variation, the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, and persistent shortage

George L. Anesi et al.

Summary: High ICU strain is associated with ICU triage decisions and patient mortality, while it may promote patient flow efficiency. The COVID-19 pandemic has complex effects on care delivery and outcomes, providing a learning opportunity for strain response in both pandemic and non-pandemic times.

Balancing scarce hospital resources during the COVID-19 pandemic using discrete-event simulation

G. J. Melman et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to the proposal of a discrete-event simulation model to evaluate resource allocation strategies in hospitals. The study found that in COVID-19 scenarios, ring-fencing operating theatre capacity strategy outperforms others, although it results in higher critical care rejections.
