A multi-vortex micromixer based on the synergy of acoustics and inertia for nanoparticle synthesis

Yuwen Lu et al.

Summary: In this study, we proposed an acoustic-inertial micromixer based on multi-vortex synergy by introducing inertia into acoustic micromixer. The device contains side-wall sharp-edge structure and contraction-expansion array structure to enhance the acoustic streaming with inertial vortices. Rapider mixing and wider operating ranges were achieved in this device at lower driving voltages compared with conventional acoustic micromixers.

A cost-effective serpentine micromixer utilizing ellipse curve

Xin Wang et al.

Summary: The serpentine micromixer with ellipse curve design shows improved mixing performance and reduced pressure drop compared to traditional zigzag and square-wave designs. By utilizing Dean vortices induced by the continuous change in flow direction through ellipse curves, this novel micromixer is more cost-effective for rapid mixing in complex microfluidic systems.

Mixing intensification using sound-driven micromixer with sharp edges

Chuanyu Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the performance of Sharp-Edge Acoustic Streaming (SEAS) micromixers through numerical simulation and experiments, identifying key factors affecting mixing efficiency. The shape of flow streamlines reveals the interaction between acoustic streaming and main flow, leading to enhanced mixing performance. An optimal structure among the mixers reduces micromixing time significantly, confirming the micromixing performance of SEAS mixer compared to passive mixers at low Reynolds flow.

Flow of Non-Newtonian Fluids in a Single-Cavity Microchannel

Mahmud Kamal Raihan et al.

Summary: Investigating the flow of five types of non-Newtonian fluids through a microchannel, it was found that fluid inertia plays a key role in developing vortices in the expansion flow, while shear thinning and elasticity have different effects on the flow properties. In a contraction-expansion microchannel, the flow characteristics are significantly influenced by the confinement.

Nonlinear microfluidics: device physics, functions, and applications

H. M. Xia et al.

Summary: Microfluidic flow is typically laminar, but at intermediate Reynolds numbers, weak-inertia flow regimes with secondary flows such as Dean vortices can be accessed through microfluidic manipulations. Nonlinear factors like non-Newtonian fluid properties, concurrent flow of dissimilar fluids, compliant fluidic structures, etc., can also affect flow behaviors.

Gear-shaped micromixer for synthesis of silica particles utilizing inertio-elastic flow instability

Sun Ok Hong et al.

Summary: The study discusses the challenge of mixing in microscale flows and proposes an efficient mixing scheme by combining inertio-elastic flow instability with a modified serpentine channel design. Results show that this new scheme achieves highly efficient mixing over a wider range of flow rates and is successfully applied to the continuous synthesis of silica nanoparticles, resulting in nanoparticles with more uniform size distribution.
