Experimental investigation on heat transfer law of multiple freezing pipes in permeable stratum with high seepage velocity

Bin Wang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the heat transfer law of freezing pipes in permeable strata with high seepage velocity and its impact on the development of frozen walls through model tests. Results showed that increased seepage velocity led to asymmetric development of the frozen wall, and a decrease in the distance between adjacent freezing fronts resulted in accelerated freezing speed due to the group-pipe-effect.

Coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical modeling of frost heave and water migration during artificial freezing of soils for mineshaft sinking

M. Zhelnin et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) model to study the effects of frost heave and water migration on the formation of a frozen wall and excavation activity in frozen soils. The model considers primary variables such as porosity, temperature, and displacement, and incorporates constitutive relations for mechanical deformation. The model is validated through comparison with experimental data and applied to numerical simulations in a real-world engineering scenario.

Coupled thermal-hydraulic modeling of artificial ground freezing with uncertainties in pipe inclination and thermal conductivity

Yong Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, a unit cell model of freeze pipes was established to examine the effects of uncertainties such as groundwater seepage, freeze pipe inclination, and spatial variability in thermal conductivity on the AGF system. Results show that considering these uncertainties can help evaluate the additional freezing time required and provide reasonable freeze pipe spacing and critical seepage velocity.

Effect of rising damp in unstabilized rammed earth (URE) walls

Xiang Zhang et al.

Summary: The study shows that time plays a positive role in improving the Thermal-hydro-mechanical properties of Unstabilized Rammed Earth walls, while rising damp has a cooling effect on wall temperature, causing water to flow faster towards the bottom.

Summary: The study introduces a numerical solution for water freezing phenomenon in various soil types by utilizing finite element method and model order reduction technique. The aim is to develop a mathematical model that can produce numerical results with negligible CPU time by varying three parameters related to soil characteristics. The results obtained demonstrate the influence of soil parameters on the freezing process and ice wall dimension.

The effect of horizontal freezing on the characteristics of water migration and matric suction in unsaturated silt

Tianxiao Tang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the mechanism of water migration during horizontal freezing, and establishes a model based on experimental results to describe the characteristics of water-heat movement in unsaturated freezing soil, analyzing the interactions of temperature, unfrozen water, ice, and matric suction. The influence of temperature gradient and initial water content on the freezing process characteristics is also studied.
