A bioinspired strategy to construct dual-superlyophobic PPMB membrane for switchable oil/water separation

Jingcheng Wu et al.

Summary: In this study, a bioinspired accurate-deposition strategy was used to fabricate a dual-superlyophobic polypropylene melt blown (PPMB) membrane with photocatalytic self-cleaning property. UV oxidized gallic acid (UGA) reacted with polyethyleneimine (PEI) to form unique coral-like three-dimensional micro-/nanoscale structures, which played a vital role in the dual-superlyophobicity of the membrane. By using UGA/PEI coating as an intermediate adhesive layer, a novel, green, and fast coating method was developed to anchor titanate nanotubes (TNTs) on the PPMB membranes. The membrane exhibited excellent ability for switchable separation of oil/water mixtures and emulsions, and had high separation efficiencies and self-cleaning property.

Effect of steric hindrance on lubrication and corrosion resistance of oil soluble ionic liquids

Xiaoyan Yan et al.

Summary: This study synthesized three sterically-hindered quaternary ammonium phosphate ionic liquids and investigated the effect of the alkyl chain structure of oil soluble ILs on their lubricating and anti-corrosion abilities. The research found that when lower steric hindrance was present, the amount of ILs adsorbed increased, resulting in the formation of more antiwear compounds and a hydrophobic layer that isolated the corrosive environment.

Gradient Adhesive Hydrogel Decorated Superhydrophilic Membranes for Ultra-Stable Oil/Water Separation

Shoujian Gao et al.

Summary: Hydrogels have been widely used for oil/water separation, but the contradictive relationship between high adhesion on membranes and anti-oil-fouling ability has limited their effectiveness. In this study, a new design of adhesive hydrogel on membranes is proposed, which integrates high adhesion, outstanding anti-oil-fouling ability, ultrathin thickness, and good durability. The adhesive hydrogel, consisting of protocatechuic acid and calcium alginate, is distributed in a gradient manner on the membranes, providing excellent stability. The membranes decorated with this adhesive hydrogel exhibit superhydrophilicity, resistance to various oils, and anti-abrasion properties, enabling efficient and stable separation of oil-in-water emulsions and crude oil/water mixtures.
