Serological differentiation of West Nile virus- and Usutu virus-induced antibodies by envelope proteins with modified cross-reactive epitopes

Beatrice Sarah Berneck et al.

Summary: Due to climate change and the expansion of mosquito vectors, flaviviruses such as West Nile virus (WNV) and Usutu virus (USUV) are becoming endemic in more countries. The serological diagnosis and differentiation between WNV and USUV infections have been challenging due to cross-reacting antibodies. This study developed an improved diagnostic technology that can differentiate antibodies produced during WNV and USUV infections, potentially aiding in the diagnosis of closely related flavivirus infections.

Cross-Reactive Immunity among Five Medically Important Mosquito-Borne Flaviviruses Related to Human Diseases

Baohua Hou et al.

Summary: Flaviviruses, transmitted by mosquitoes or ticks, cause a range of severe diseases globally. The similarity of antigenicity among several mosquito-borne flaviviruses complicates prevention and control due to cross-reactive immune responses. Effective vaccines are only available for yellow fever and Japanese encephalitis, while vaccines for other flavivirus diseases are still in development. The development of a dengue fever vaccine is hindered by antibody-dependent enhancement caused by cross-reactive immune responses. Cross-reactive immunity from prior infection of mosquito-borne flavivirus may also impact the outcome of subsequent heterologous flavivirus infection.

A One-Health Approach to Investigating an Outbreak of Alimentary Tick-Borne Encephalitis in a Non-endemic Area in France (Ain, Eastern France): A Longitudinal Serological Study in Livestock, Detection in Ticks, and the First Tick-Borne Encephalitis Virus Isolation and Molecular Characterisation

Gaelle Gonzalez et al.

Summary: The geographic range and incidence of tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) are expanding in Europe, posing a risk of outbreaks in non-endemic regions. An outbreak of TBE occurred in Ain, Eastern France in 2020, with all but one patient consuming unpasteurized raw goat cheese. An investigation using a One Health approach confirmed the alimentary origin of the outbreak, identified a risk area for TBEV exposure, and obtained the first TBEV isolate transmitted through food in France.

Summary: France experienced an unusual situation of dengue transmission in 2022 with a higher number of cases than the previous decade, including cases in areas with no previous transmission. Continuous adaptation of preparedness and response to arbovirus-related risks is necessary.

One Health surveillance of West Nile and Usutu viruses: a repeated cross-sectional study exploring seroprevalence and endemicity in Southern France, 2016 to 2020

Orianne Constant et al.

Summary: The study observed active transmission of WNV and USUV in Southern France, with higher USUV prevalence in humans, dogs, birds, and mosquitoes, and higher WNV prevalence in horses. Genetic data showed the presence of the same lineages in mosquitoes from 2015 to 2020. The findings support existing literature suggesting endemicity of WNV and USUV in the region.

Summary: Migratory birds can introduce African ticks and tick-borne pathogens into European countries, with a higher contribution from trans-Saharan migrants. These results confirm the role of migratory birds in carrying African ticks and viruses of zoonotic importance from Africa into Europe.

Joao Queiros et al.

Summary: Bagaza virus was first detected in Spain in 2010 and was not reported in other European countries until 2021 when it was found in a corn bunting and several red-legged partridges in Portugal. Sequence analysis revealed a high similarity between the 2021 strains from Portugal and the 2010 strains from Spain.

Domestic Dogs as Sentinels for West Nile Virus but not Aedes-borne Flaviviruses, Mexico

Edward Davila et al.

Summary: The study tested 294 domestic pet dogs in Mexico for neutralizing antibodies for mosquito-borne flaviviruses, finding high exposure to West Nile virus in some areas and low exposure to Aedes-borne flaviviruses. Domestic dogs may serve as useful sentinels for monitoring West Nile virus.

Summary: Italy has been recording cases of West Nile virus infection since 2008, with 1145 cases diagnosed between 2012 and 2020, including 487 cases of West Nile neuro-invasive disease (WNND). Risk factors were found to be mainly related to age and gender, showing an increasing trend over the study period.
