Sex-related deposition and metabolism of vanisulfane, a novel vanillin-derived pesticide, in rats and its hepatotoxic and gonadal effects

Siyao Shao et al.

Summary: A range of vanillin derivatives, particularly vanisulfane, have shown promising antiviral activities against cucumber mosaic virus and potato virus Y. However, research on these pesticides often overlooks their metabolites and gender-specific toxicity effects. A recent study using C labeling investigated the metabolism, excretion, and tissue distribution of vanisulfane in male and female rats, revealing differences in clearance rates and excretion pathways between the sexes. Additionally, exposure to vanisulfane was found to lead to hepatic steatosis and mild gonadal effects in rats, highlighting the importance of considering gender-specific risks of novel pesticides in mammalian studies.

Are nanomaterials leading to more efficient agriculture? Outputs from 2009 to 2022 research metadata analysis

E. Santos et al.

Summary: This article provides a quantitative overview of how scientists have studied the effects of nanomaterials on plants between 2009 and 2022. The analysis shows that cultivated crops and plant nutrients are the main focus, and nanomaterials generally have higher concentrations than traditional fertilizers and soil. However, the studies have relatively short time spans, limited attention to soil microorganisms, and few experiments conducted under field conditions. Therefore, establishing correlations between effects and experimental parameters is challenging. The article concludes by discussing the potential impact of nanomaterials on plant systems.

Is centrifugal ultrafiltration a robust method for determining encapsulation efficiency of pesticide nanoformulations?

Rocio Lopez-Cabeza et al.

Summary: Loading active ingredients on nanocarrier systems is a common strategy for improving pesticide formulations. However, the losses of active ingredients during centrifugal ultrafiltration are typically not assessed, potentially leading to erroneous results. The EE of compounds such as chlorpyrifos may not be suitable for determination by centrifugal ultrafiltration, as 100% losses were observed on all devices tested. Losses of tebuconazole and terbuthylazine varied depending on the type of membrane, with the lowest losses occurring in devices with hydrophilic regenerated cellulose membranes. A correction factor was proposed and demonstrated to calculate the EE of nanoformulations based on poly(epsilon-caprolactone) nanocarriers.
