How the exposure to environmentally relevant pesticide formulations affects the expression of stress response genes and its relation to oxidative damage and genotoxicity in Caiman latirostris

Lucia M. Odetti et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the molecular stress responses in blood of Caiman latirostris hatchlings exposed to pesticide formulations and found that the expression levels of catalase (cat), superoxide dismutase (sod), and heat shock protein 70 (hsp70) genes were altered, which were associated with oxidative damage and genotoxicity. The pesticides tested showed significant increase in DNA damage and micronucleus frequency, as well as oxidation. The expression levels of cat gene were significantly higher in the cypermethrin group, while the expression of hsp70 gene was significantly lower in glyphosate, cypermethrin, and the ternary mixture group compared to the negative control group.

Alterations in the Expression of Antioxidant Enzyme Genes in Response to Pesticide Exposure During Embryonic Development in the Native Reptile Species Caiman latirostris

L. M. Odetti et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to measure the expression levels of antioxidant response genes Catalase (cat) and copper, zinc Superoxide dismutase (Cu, Zn-sod) in Caiman latirostris (broad-snouted caiman) blood after exposure to cypermethrin (CYP), chlorpyrifos (CPF), glyphosate (GLY), and their binary and ternary mixtures during embryonic development. The results showed a decrease in the expression of sod and cat genes in the three binary mixtures compared to the controls. There was also a possible antagonistic effect between different pesticides in the ternary mixture on the expression of both genes.

Stress response markers in the blood of Sao Tome green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) and their relation with accumulated metal levels

Ines F. C. Morao et al.

Summary: Green sea turtles nesting in Sa Tomé and Principe archipelago showed accumulation of metals and metalloids in their blood, with molecular stress responses indicating adaptation to oxidative stress caused by metals. This raises concerns about the impact on the fitness of these endangered animals. Promising biomarkers associated with metal stress were identified in this species for future biomonitoring studies using C. mydas' blood.

Julieta Peluso et al.

Summary: The study found that glyphosate was significantly more toxic to Rhinella arenarum larvae than 2,4-D, with toxicity varying over time. The equitoxic mixture showed additive toxicity at 48 hours and became antagonistic at LC10 and LC50 effect levels after 96 hours. The non-equitoxic mixture exhibited additive toxicity at LC10 effect level from 48 to 168 hours, and synergistic effect from 240 hours.

Summary: Hibernation is a short-term survival strategy for ectotherms to deal with cold weather and lack of food. This study examined the changes in endocrine hormones in the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonad axis of female lizards after exposure to chlorantraniliprole insecticide during hibernation. The results showed that the levels of several hormones were altered, indicating possible endocrine disrupting effects.

Genotoxicity evaluation of 2,4-D, dicamba and glyphosate alone or in combination with cell reporter assays for DNA damage, oxidative stress and unfolded protein response

Robin Mesnage et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the carcinogenic potential of three herbicides using the ToxTracker assay system, finding that 2,4-D induced strong oxidative stress and unfolded protein response, dicamba induced mild oxidative stress, and glyphosate did not show positive outcomes. A mixture of the three herbicides primarily resulted in an oxidative stress response, with 2,4-D likely playing a major role. These findings provide initial insights into the risk assessment of carcinogenic effects from exposure to these herbicide mixtures.
