Scaling analysis for rapid estimation of lack of fusion porosity in laser powder bed fusion

Pramod R. Zagade et al.

Summary: A novel functional relation is proposed for rapid estimation of lack-of-fusion porosity fraction in laser powder bed fusion (LPBF). The estimated values are in good agreement with experimental results for five commonly used alloys and a wide range of process conditions. The functional relation is further used to construct process maps for avoiding lack-of-fusion porosity on the shop floor.

Description of anisotropic material response of wire and arc additively manufactured thin-walled stainless steel elements

Nicolas Hadjipantelis et al.

Summary: Compared to conventionally-produced structural steel and stainless steel elements, wire and arc additively manufactured (WAAM) elements exhibit a strongly anisotropic material response. Tensile tests on WAAM stainless steel sheets were conducted to investigate this behavior. The results showed that the mechanical response in the elastic range can be accurately described using an orthotropic plane stress material model, and the anisotropy in the inelastic range can be captured through the Hill yield criterion.

Revealing the influence of Fe on Fe-rich phases formation and mechanical properties of cast Al-Mg-Mn-Fe alloys

Yuliang Zhao et al.

Summary: Recycled Al-Mg-Mn-Fe alloys with different Fe levels were successfully prepared by squeeze casting. The relationship between microstructural evolution and mechanical properties was studied using various techniques. The results showed that Fe additions increased the yield strength and ultimate tensile strength of the alloys. The morphological evolution of the alloys from individual Chinese-script to interconnected plate-like shape was observed. In-situ radiography revealed the facet growth behavior of Al6(FeMn) phases during solidification. The applied pressure was found to refine the grains and reduce the volume fraction of pores, contributing to the improvement of strength and elongation.

Siyu Zhou et al.

Summary: Inter-layer plastic deformation is an effective method to improve the mechanical properties of wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) components. In this study, a periodic microstructure composed of alternate coarse and fine grain regions was obtained by applying the inter-layer hammering hybrid WAAM process. The grain size and dislocation density in the recrystallization region were significantly refined, leading to improved tensile properties. The best results were achieved when the inter-layer region was hammered 3 times.

Microstructure Evolution and Mechanical Property Anisotropy of Wire and Arc-Additive-Manufactured Wall Structure Using ER2319 Welding Wires

Mingye Dong et al.

Summary: The study focused on the microstructure and mechanical property anisotropy of a wall structure fabricated using ER2319 welding wires and CMT-PAdv-based wire and arc additive manufacturing (WAAM). Heat treatment was applied after the WAAM process, leading to changes in the microstructure and mechanical properties, with netlike second phases becoming discontinuous while pores and Fe-rich phases remained largely unchanged. Further analysis revealed that mechanical properties showed isotropy before heat treatment and anisotropy after heat treatment, with the directionality of crack growth influenced by factors such as alpha-Al content and the presence of brittle Fe-rich phases.
