In-situ damage assessment of FML joints under uniaxial tension combining with acoustic emission and DIC: Geometric influence on damage formation

Peifei Xu et al.

Summary: The study assesses the damage in single-lap fiber metal laminate joints with various geometries under uniaxial tension, using acoustic emission and digital image correlation to record events and strain fields, with identification based on peak frequencies corresponding to different types of damage. The analysis utilizes Hashin criterion, cohesive constitutive relations, and ductile damage criterion to predict damage evolution in fiber metal laminate.

Mode II fracture of an MMA adhesive layer: Theory versus experiment

Sina Askarinejad et al.

Summary: This study aims to develop a mechanics model for adhesive fracture of lap joints under shear loading. Crack initiation and growth in the joints are measured and monitored by Digital Image Correlation. The study assesses the ability of a cohesive zone model to predict various features of specimen failure in cases of high shear ductility adhesive layers.

Damage detection in composite aircraft wing-like test-box using distributed fiber optic sensors

Amitabha Datta et al.

Summary: Structural Health Monitoring Systems for aircraft structures aim to detect damage with minimum downtime by using a distributed fiber optic sensor system. This system can effectively detect the location and size of damage through monitoring localized strain changes. The damage severity can be determined by calculating a damage index based on the strain difference of all sensors.

Application of embedded fibre Bragg grating sensors for structural health monitoring of complex composite structures for marine applications

Magdalena Mieloszyk et al.

Summary: This study presents an application of embedded FBG sensors arrays for evaluation of a complex composite structure - a fast patrol boat. The experimental investigations include spectra analyses for thin laminate sample, a composite sandwich panel, and the boat hull. The quality of sensors spectra and the relationship between strain and temperature were determined, with a linear relationship achieved for both elements. The utility of designed FBG sensors array was verified by sensors responses on impact excitation in chosen points on the structure.

3D-DIC strain field measurements in bolted and hybrid bolted-bonded joints of woven carbon-epoxy composites

Masoud Mehrabian et al.

Summary: In this study, the 3D digital image correlation technique was used to study the tensile behaviors of single-lap bolted and hybrid bolted-bonded joints. The results show that hybridization can mitigate stress concentration around bolts, delay damage initiation, reduce secondary bending and twisting, and improve strength retention, while maintaining a balance between bypass and bearing loads in multi-bolt fastened joints.
