Experimental and numerical studies on influence of impact damage and simple bolt repair on compressive failure of composite laminates

Dongfeng Cao et al.

Summary: This study presents a combination of experimental and numerical investigations on the influence of impact damage and the effectiveness of a proposed simple bolt repair on the compressive failure of composite laminates. Experimental results show a significant reduction in compressive strength for specimens with impact damage, which can be partially reinstated with the proposed in-service repair method. Preliminary numerical simulations of compressive after impact (CAI) tests without and with the simple bolt repair validate the effectiveness of the repair and provide a useful tool for design and optimization of in-service repairs.

Mechanical Properties of Thin-Ply Composites Based on Acoustic Emission Technology

Kaidong Zheng et al.

Summary: Thin-ply composites demonstrate superior mechanical performance compared to standard-ply composites due to positive size effects. Failure modes including matrix initial damage, matrix failure, and fiber failure have been identified through acoustic emission signals analysis and scanning electron microscopy. The thickness of identical plies plays a significant role in the onset of damage in thin-ply laminates.

A combined experimental and computational analysis of failure mechanisms in open-hole cross-ply laminates under flexural loading

Qingping Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigated the failure mechanisms of open-hole cross-ply carbon fiber reinforced polymer laminated composites using integrated experimental tests and computational modeling. Two effective methods were proposed to obtain experimental data more reliably, and the cohesive zone model was calibrated based on these methods. The experimental results were found to be in good agreement with predictions, indicating the effectiveness of the FRMMELS tests in determining mixed-mode fracture criterion.
