Effects of the geometrical shapes on buckling of conical shells under external pressure

Yongmei Zhu et al.

Summary: The effects of geometrical shapes on the buckling of conical shells under uniform external pressure were investigated in this study. It was found that the load-carrying capacity of the conical shell was significantly improved when the meridional shape was in the form of a circular arc.

Buckling resistance of joined composite sandwich conical-cylindrical shells with lattice core under lateral pressure

M. Zarei et al.

Summary: The present study investigates the buckling analysis of joined composite sandwich conical-cylindrical shells with reinforced lattice core subjected to external pressure. The stiffness parameters of the lattice core are determined using an effective smeared technique and combined with those of the skins. The theoretical formulation is based on first-shear deformation theory and continuity conditions. A highly accurate solution for evaluating the buckling load is provided using power series technique. Finite element analysis is performed to validate the analytical model, and the influence of important design variables on buckling characteristics is investigated.

Prediction of buckling capacity of liquid-filled steel conical tanks considering field-measured imperfections

H. Zhang et al.

Summary: This study uses high-resolution laser scan data to extract geometric imperfections and conducts elastoplastic finite element analysis to evaluate the buckling capacity of a stiffened conical steel water tank. The results suggest that local imperfections may be more critical than the combination of global and local imperfections in terms of the tank's buckling capacity.

Plastic buckling of axially compressed cones using the equivalent cylinder approach

O. Ifayefunmi et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the buckling behavior of relatively thick steel conical shells under axial compression through experimental and theoretical studies. The existing design recommendations lack experimental validation in the plastic buckling region, leading to the proposal of a new equivalent cylinder radius with better accuracy for design purposes.

Probing the buckling of pressurized spherical shells

Arefeh Abbasi et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the mechanical response of pressurized spherical shells with a single dimple-like defect to a point probe, characterizing the nonlinear force-indentation response at different pressurization levels through experiments, finite element modeling, and classic shell theory. The critical buckling pressure of the shell can be inferred non-destructively by tracking the maxima of the indentation force-displacement curves, with the effectiveness of probing influenced by the indentation angle. The study also quantifies the characteristic length associated with localized deformation using FEM simulations and shallow shell theory, demonstrating the limitations of applying probing as a non-destructive technique to assess the stability of spherical shells.

Buckling behaviors of thin-walled cylindrical shells under localized axial compression loads, Part 2: Numerical study

Peng Jiao et al.

Summary: In this paper, a high-fidelity finite element model was established to study the buckling behaviors of thin-walled cylindrical shell under localized axial compression load. The feasibility and accuracy of the model were validated through comparison with experimental results. Factors such as material yield strength and initial geometric imperfections were found to play dominant roles in the buckling behaviors of cylindrical shells under localized axial compression loads, providing guidance for design and application in engineering.

Buckling of unstiffened cone-cylinder shells subjected to axial compression and thermal loading

O. Ifayefunmi et al.

Summary: The paper presents a numerical and experimental study on the instability of unstiffened mild steel cone-cylinder assembly under simultaneously acting quasi-static axial compression and thermal load. Results show good correlation between experimental data and numerically obtained buckling load, with a percentage difference ranging from +10% to 7%. The first combined stability domains for cone-cylinder assembly under combined axial compression and temperature were presented, along with further evaluation of buckling effect under varying parameters and consideration of initial imperfections.

A direct approach to progressive buckling design considering ratcheting deformation

Fang Liu et al.

Summary: In this paper, the Bree diagram is extended to consider progressive buckling failure, with a direct approach developed for structural progressive buckling design considering ratcheting deformation. The progressive buckling mechanism under the combination of constant and cyclic loadings is discussed, with a two-stage direct approach based on Linear Matching Method and nonlinear buckling analysis presented to generate design curves in the extended Bree diagram. The direct approach is shown to accurately predict progressive buckling load compared to other methods, with formulas derived for progressive buckling design of cylindrical shells with various geometrical parameters.
