Effect of Dexamethasone and Route of Administration on Sow Farrowing Behaviours, Piglet Delivery and Litter Performance

Sophia A. Ward et al.

Summary: The study found that dexamethasone can permeate through porcine vaginal mucosa, providing a non-injectable treatment option. Administering dexamethasone did not significantly impact farrowing performance, piglet survival rate, or behavior changes in sows.

The differences in energy metabolism and redox status between sows with short and long farrowing duration

Yang Liu et al.

Summary: Farrowing duration is a critical factor affecting piglet survival and sow health, with shorter farrowing duration sows showing higher blood glucose and lower lactate concentrations, but higher malondialdehyde concentration. Additionally, sows with shorter farrowing duration had a shorter time from last meal to farrowing initiation, and tended to have lower stillbirth and higher survival rates.

Management and Feeding Strategies in Early Life to Increase Piglet Performance and Welfare around Weaning: A Review

Laia Blavi et al.

Summary: The weaning period in swine industry is crucial, and a range of dietary and management strategies are needed to optimize health, maturity, and weight at weaning. Various strategies have been explored to enhance fetal growth, reduce oxidative and inflammatory status of sows, modulate sow microbiota, improve colostrum and milk production, and ensure care of neonatal piglets.

Effect of intramuscular and intravaginal PGE-2 treatment compared to intramuscular oxytocin treatment in eutocic sows on the farrowing performance in a free farrowing system

Ramona Bill et al.

Summary: In this study, the efficacy of Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and oxytocin in improving the parturition process in sows was evaluated. Both treatments did not show a significant effect on the farrowing process or piglet vitality compared to untreated sows, but significant differences were found between PGE-2 and oxytocin treatments. Oxytocin-treated sows had significantly shorter farrowing duration compared to sows treated with PGE2, indicating differences in the effects of the two treatments.

Effects of uterotonics on farrowing traits and piglet vitality: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Bruno B. D. Muro et al.

Summary: Uterotonics, such as oxytocin and carbetocin, have varied effects on pig farrowing including increasing stillborn proportion, shortening farrowing duration and birth interval, and increasing the need for farrowing assistance. The use of these drugs should be carefully considered on a case-by-case basis due to potential deleterious effects for piglets and sows.

Summary: This paper discusses the decreasing viability of neonatal piglets with the increase in the number of piglets born per sow per year; emphasizes the importance of early intervention and management strategies in improving piglet survival rates; and introduces some management strategies for identifying low-viability piglets and increasing their survival rates.

Parturition in Mammals: Animal Models, Pain and Distress

Julio Martinez-Burnes et al.

Summary: Labour is a painful episode involving multiple physiological, hormonal, morphological, and behavioral changes. Pain during parturition is a potential welfare concern for both women and domestic animals. Despite limited studies on pain during birth in domestic animals, there is a growing awareness of the importance of recognizing and treating pain during labour.

Meloxicam and Dexamethasone Administration as Anti-Inflammatory Compounds to Sows Prior to Farrowing Does Not Improve Lactation Performance

Kate J. Plush et al.

Summary: The experiment aimed to evaluate the efficacy of NSAID and SAID for improving farrowing house performance of sows, but found that administering meloxicam to older sows reduced the number of live piglets born. While both NSAID and SAID improved feed intake, there was no significant improvement in piglet growth or postnatal mortality.
