Simulation of mixed mode I-II crack propagation in concrete using toughness-based crack initiation-propagation criterion with modified fracture energy

Zhuheng Li et al.

Summary: In this paper, the modified parameter-based TCIP criterion previously developed for mode-I fracture was extended to mixed mode I-II fracture. The extended criterion was applied on three-point bending beams with offset and multi-segment notches through finite element analysis, obtaining the full crack trajectories and nonlinear mechanical responses for mixed mode I-II fracture on concrete materials. The use of TCIP criterion with modified fracture energy parameter was found to be limited on concretes, suggesting more prominent applications on other geomaterials such as rocks, for both static and dynamic analysis.

Fracture model for predicting tensile strength and fracture toughness of concrete under different loading rates

Shutong Yang et al.

Summary: In order to assess the safety of concrete structures under dynamic loading conditions, it is necessary to understand the rate dependences of concrete fracture parameters. This study aims to develop a fracture model to determine the size-independent tensile strength, fracture toughness, and fracture energy of concrete under different loading rates. The fracture mechanism was analyzed through bending tests on concrete beams, and a fracture model was proposed to predict these fracture parameters. The study provides insights into the fracture behaviors of concrete under different loading rates and guidance for disaster prevention of concrete structures.

Investigation of fracture properties and size effects of mass concrete using wedge splitting tests on large specimens

Azzeddine Bakour et al.

Summary: This study presents experimental results of fracture tests on very large concrete specimens with a maximum aggregate size of 100 mm, investigating size and temperature effects. The digital image correlation (DIC) technique was used to assess fracture parameters and compare them with theoretical computed parameters based on linear elastic fracture mechanics. Cyclic splitting tests provided important conclusions regarding the evolution of fracture process zone length and critical opening displacement, validating hypotheses associated with disturbed fracture process zone theory and the size effect on fracture energy.

Experimental investigation of mixed mode I-II fatigue crack propagation in concrete using a digital image correlation method

Mengdi Jia et al.

Summary: This paper presents an experimental study on the mixed mode I-II fatigue crack propagation in concrete. The results show that the process can be divided into three stages and the crack propagation path under static loading is similar to that under fatigue loading. The crack tip opening displacement, crack tip sliding displacement, mode I stress intensity factor, and mode II stress intensity factor are independent of the fatigue load level.

Experimental and Numerical Study on Mixed Mode I-II Fatigue Crack Propagation in Concrete

Mengdi Jia et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a numerical method for mixed mode I-II fatigue crack propagation in concrete. Experimental validation shows that the proposed method is applicable. Additionally, it is found that the mixed mode I-II fatigue failure of concrete occurs when the mode I stress intensity factor reaches a critical value, regardless of the fatigue load level and the fatigue life. Numerical results indicate that the mixed mode I-II fatigue crack propagation path is independent of the fatigue load level.

Concrete fracture considering aggregate grading

Junfeng Guan et al.

Summary: An improved fracture model for concrete is proposed in this study, which combines the advantages of size and boundary effect models to determine material parameters while considering aggregate grading. Through quantitative research, a simple method for determining fictitious crack growth length at peak loads is identified. The study shows that independent fracture toughness and tensile strength of concrete can be determined through curve fitting, taking into account factors such as maximum aggregate size, water to cement ratio, and coarse aggregate volume that affect fracture.
