Effect of shear-induced contact area and aperture variations on nonlinear flow behaviors in fractal rock fractures

Changsheng Wang et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigates the nonlinear flow characteristics and channelization of fluid through rough-walled fractures during shear process. The results show that the critical Reynolds number increases with increasing shear displacement but decreases with increasing fracture surface roughness. As the shear displacement increases, preferential flow paths become more distinct and the area of single contacts increases.

Analytical study of subcritical crack growth under mode I loading to estimate the roof durability in underground excavation

Songtao Ji et al.

Summary: This study introduces a computation scheme of subcritical crack growth for estimating the durability of roof strata in underground excavation, providing a method to calculate potential collapse locations, estimate roof durability, and determine initial crack sizes. Through case studies, a strong correlation between applied stress and roof durability is showcased, with the allowable tensile stress identified for a 100-year life cycle. The proposed method allows for assessing roof stability in underground excavation from both spatial and temporal perspectives.

Tensile mode fracture toughness experiments on andesite rock using disc and semi-disc bend geometries with varying loading spans

Levent Tutluoglu et al.

Summary: The purpose of this research was to investigate the effect of loading span on mode I fracture toughness. Mode I fracture toughness tests were conducted on specimens with different geometries, and it was found that reducing the span length and increasing the specimen thickness can increase the fracture toughness. The differences in test results for different specimen geometries can be explained by the maximum normal strain criterion.

Junfeng Guan et al.

Summary: This paper presents a model that uses only two sets of small-size rock specimens to determine fracture and strength parameters without size effect and predict the actual structural performance of rocks. The model has been validated and shown to accurately predict the behavior of large-size specimens.

Experimental study on the influence of prefabricated fissure size on the directional propagation law of rock type-I crack

Le-xin Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of prefabricated fissure size on the directional propagation law of rock cracks. Through simulations and loading tests, it is found that the initial crack angle is mainly influenced by the fissure width. The crack propagation process can be divided into four stages, and increasing the fissure length benefits crack propagation while increasing the fissure width leads to instability in the main crack propagation path.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of pre-cracks on the fracture of rock beams and develops a pre-splitting design method. Experimental results show that pre-cracked beams exhibit different mechanical properties and the pre-splitting design method effectively reduces microseismic energy.

Influence of lateral pressure on mechanical behavior of different rock types under biaxial compression

Wei Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of lateral pressure on the mechanical behavior of different rock types and analyzes the formation mechanism of macro-fracture surface. Results show that the brittleness and burst proneness of rock or coal material are stronger than that of gypsum material. The peak stress and elastic modulus increase with the increase of lateral pressure until a certain point, beyond which they decrease slightly or remain steady due to local failure.

Summary: The investigation on rock fracture process zone (FPZ) using SCB sandstone specimens of different sizes showed a three-stage crack opening mode and accelerated FPZ development as load increased. The FPZ length at peak is approximately 2-2.5 times the width for specimens of different sizes.

Zhao Tong-bin et al.

Summary: The research found that during the structural deformation stage of large deformation bolts, the drawing force, bolt axial force, and interfacial shear stress remain stable; when the structural elements of the large deformation bolt approach the drawing end, the fluctuation range of the drawing force decreases, which is advantageous for maintaining the stress stability of the anchorage body.

Cracking mechanisms of a medium-grained granite under mixed-mode I-II loading illuminated by acoustic emission

Tian Yang Guo et al.

Summary: Research shows that under mixed-mode I-II loading conditions, the initiation angles of macrocracks in granite are less influenced compared to more homogeneous materials like PMMA. Acoustic emissions monitoring reveals that microcracks under mixed-mode I-II loading conditions do not nucleate as easily as under mode I loading. Additionally, the presence of mode II loading alters the acoustic emissions source mechanisms, affecting the unstable propagation of macrocracks.

Tensile Strength and Fracture Surface Morphology of Granite Under Confined Direct Tension Test

Yang Liu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the tensile strength and fracture morphology of granite samples under different confining pressures and tensile loading rates through direct tension tests. It was found that the tensile strength of rock first increases and then decreases with the increase in confining pressure, and slightly increases with the increase in tensile loading rate. The study also revealed that the roughness of fracture surface is closely related to the micro and macro-fracture patterns, providing insight into the correlation between tensile strength and fracture roughness with confining pressure and loading rate.
