The Impact of ICT on Electricity and Energy Consumption and Resulting CO2 Emissions: A Literature Review

Wolfgang Briglauer et al.

Summary: Digitalization-related services and applications have opposing effects on energy consumption and CO2 emissions. The direct effects are related to production, operation, and disposal of ICT elements, while the indirect effects are related to their usage. Higher ICT intensity in developed countries tends to lower CO2 emissions and have positive environmental effects.

Economic complexity and the green economy

Penny Mealy et al.

Summary: This paper develops a new methodology to measure the productive capabilities of countries in the green economy and ranks them accordingly. The results indicate that countries with higher rankings tend to perform better in terms of environmental patenting rates, CO2 emissions, and environmental policies, even after controlling for per capita GDP. Additionally, the paper explores the potential of countries to transition into green products in the future and finds strong path dependence in the accumulation of green capabilities. These findings shed new light on green industrialization and have implications for green industrial policy.
