Corrosion resistances of metallic materials in environments containing chloride ions: A review

Xian-man Zhang et al.

Summary: This work provides an overview of recent progress in understanding the degradation mechanism and improving the corrosion resistance and corrosion-wear resistance of materials in marine environments. The particular emphasis is given to the anti-corrosion properties of periodic layered structures (PLSs). Numerical simulation and experimental analysis reveal the micro-galvanic corrosion dominated degradation mechanism of PLSs. Various laboratory setups for corrosion-wear studies are also summarized. Future research and development prospects for the application of PLSs in corrosion protection methodology are discussed.

Diffusion in doped and undoped amorphous zirconia

Megan W. Owen et al.

Summary: Grain boundaries in ZrO2 can serve as pathways for species like oxygen and hydrogen, influencing corrosion. Impurities and alloying elements can lead to highly-doped grain boundaries with amorphous structures, which shows increased oxygen diffusivity compared to undoped crystalline systems.

Re-examination of the Aqueous Stability of Atomic Layer Deposited (ALD) Amorphous Alumina (Al2O3) Thin Films and the Use of a Postdeposition Air Plasma Anneal to Enhance Stability

Simon A. Willis et al.

Summary: This study investigates the aqueous stability of amorphous aluminum oxide thin films deposited by atomic layer deposition. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveals the formation of oxyhydroxide, hydroxide, and possible carbonate species on the film surface after water immersion. Exposure to air plasma anneal is shown to significantly enhance the film's stability in near-neutral pH aqueous conditions, providing a new alternative to traditional thermal annealing methods.

The function of Cr on the rust formed on weathering steel performed in a simulated tropical marine atmosphere environment

Tianyi Zhang et al.

Summary: The study showed that the corrosion rates of weathering steels (WSs) decreased as the Cr contents in WSs increased, and the enriched area of Cr in the inner rust layer effectively blocked the invasion of Cl-. High content of Cr in steel promoted the generation of Cr(OH)(3) and Cr2O3, acting as nucleation sites for the formation of Fe3O4 and alpha-FeOOH.

A study on the erosion-corrosion behaviour of engineering materials used in the geothermal industry

F. Brownlie et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the erosion-corrosion behavior of a wide range of engineering alloys used in the geothermal industry, finding distinct differences in performance between low alloy steels and corrosion resistant alloys. The superaustenitic stainless steel and Inconel 625 exhibited the greatest erosion-corrosion resistance among the test materials, with Inconel 625 demonstrating the highest resistance to high angle corrosive wear. The relevance of the findings to materials selection and protection methods in geothermal power plants was discussed.

Fundamental understanding on the effect of Cr on corrosion resistance of weathering steel in simulated tropical marine atmosphere

Meihui Sun et al.

Summary: The addition of Cr in weathering steel greatly improves the corrosion resistance by promoting the transformation of rust layer and refining rust grains. Cr-formed products increase nucleation position and diffusion resistance, leading to a slower corrosion rate of the metal.

Direct liquid injection chemical vapor deposition of ZrO2 films from a heteroleptic Zr precursor: interplay between film characteristics and corrosion protection of stainless steel

Sebastian M. J. Beer et al.

Summary: The study presents the direct liquid injection chemical vapor deposition (DLI-CVD) of uniform and dense zirconium oxide (ZrO2) thin films for corrosion protection coatings (CPCs), with focus on varying deposition temperature to improve CPC performance. Thorough analysis revealed that ZrO2 coatings processed at 400 degrees Celsius showed enhanced properties compared to those processed at higher temperatures, providing valuable insights for future exploration of CPCs.

A low-cost, low-density, and corrosion resistant AlFeMnSi compositionally complex alloy

S. P. O'Brien et al.

Summary: A compositionally complex alloy composed of equiatomic concentrations of low-cost elements was designed and characterized using various analytical techniques. The corrosion behavior of the alloy was evaluated and found to exhibit a unique form of passivity, possibly due to the development of a silicon-rich surface film.
