Electronic, geometrical and photophysical facets of five coordinated porphyrin N-heterocyclic carbene transition metals complexes: A theoretical study

Manjeet Kumar et al.

Summary: This study explores the characteristics of dye sensitized solar cells using transition metals as photosensitizers in terms of electronic structures, energetics, and photo-physical properties. The results show that cobalt-based species are more stable, while manganese-based species are more reactive. Coordination also affects the stability of the species.

Solar energy conversion using first row d-block metal coordination compound sensitizers and redox mediators

Catherine E. Housecroft et al.

Summary: The use of renewable energy is crucial for the future of the Earth, with solar energy being the primary source to meet the growing global energy demand. Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) have emerged as a mature technology in the sustainable energy market, and this review focuses on the use of first row d-block metal coordination compounds, specifically copper, iron, and zinc, as dyes in DSCs to replace the critical raw material ruthenium. The main challenge in these DSCs is to enhance their photoconversion efficiencies which are currently lower compared to those containing ruthenium-based dyes. Advancements have been made in the development of alternative redox mediators, particularly cobalt and copper complexes, which have achieved open circuit voltage values exceeding 1000 mV when coupled with suitable dyes.
