Do Preoperative Epidural Steroid Injections Increase the Risk of Infection After Lumbar Spine Surgery?

Tyler M. Kreitz et al.

Summary: This retrospective study aimed to investigate the association between preoperative lumbar epidural corticosteroid injections (ESI) and infection after lumbar spine surgery. The results showed an increased risk of infection in patients undergoing fusion procedures with preoperative ESI, but not in those undergoing decompression only. Fusion, BMI, and CCI were identified as independent predictors of postoperative infection.
