Orange/red dual-emissive boron- and nitrogen-codoped carbon dots for wash-free and selective staining of lipid droplets in live cells

Cong She et al.

Summary: In this study, boron-and nitrogen-codoped carbon dots (BNCDs) were prepared using a solvent-free carbonization method. The BNCDs exhibited good biocompatibility, long-wavelength fluorescence emission, and excitation wavelength-independent fluorescence emission. They could be used for wash-free lipid droplet (LD) imaging and effectively track the dynamic changes of LDs in live animal cells. This work provides an ideal probe for nondestructively visualizing LDs and has implications for LD-related metabolism and diseases.

A versatile fluorescent probe for simultaneously detecting viscosity, polarity and nitroreductases and its application in bioimaging

Ya-Lin Qi et al.

Summary: A versatile fluorescent probe was developed to detect viscosity, polarity, and Nitroreductases simultaneously in living cells. The probe could accurately distinguish cancer cells from normal cells and observe dynamic changes under hypoxic conditions for the first time. It also showed the potential for imaging in tumor-bearing mouse models, making it a promising agent for image-guided surgery.

Carbon quantum dots prepared by pyrolysis: Investigation of the luminescence mechanism and application as fluorescent probes

Cunjin Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, the effect of reaction conditions on the preparation of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) by pyrolysis was investigated. Two types of CQDs with different fluorescence characteristics were successfully prepared and the mechanism behind the difference in their optical properties was studied. Moreover, CQDs-2 showed potential applications in high sensitivity and high selectivity detection of cephalosporin antibiotics based on the inner-filter effect (IFE).

Polar engineering regulates photoluminescence-tunable carbon dots for microalgal lipid imaging

Fangmei Fu et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the regulation strategy and mechanism of carbon dots (CDs) fluorescence emission by adjusting the polarity of the reaction solvent. Green, orange, and red CDs were synthesized and their fluorescence properties and solvatochromic effects were investigated. The results demonstrate that the appropriate polarity of the solvent can change the emission centers and induce a red-shift of the CDs fluorescence. Red CDs show excellent fluorescence performance and biocompatibility, making them a potential targeted probe for microalgae lipids under N-free culture conditions.

Solvatochromic Surface-Passivated Carbon Dots for Fluorometric Moisture Sensing in Organic Solvents

Melis Ozge Alas et al.

Summary: In this study, solvatochromic, red fluorescence-emitting carbon dots (rCDs) were successfully synthesized from para-phenylenediamine (p-PD) using a one-step microwave-assisted solvothermal method. The surface passivation with hydroxyl-enriched HBPs of varying generation numbers (G2 and G4) was found to significantly impact the quantum yield of rCDs, while not affecting their solvatochromic properties. The results show that the red-shifted fluorescence emission of rCDs in response to increased solvent polarity can be utilized for moisture detection in organic solvents and analysis of surface characteristics of paper strips.
