Photochemical synthesis of Au nanostars on PMMA films by ethanol action as flexible SERS substrates for in-situ detection of antibiotics on curved surfaces

Nazar Riswana Barveen et al.

Summary: This study reports on a method for synthesizing gold nanostars (Au NSs) with clean surfaces using ethanol and a simple photoreduction process. The synthesized Au NSs are applied on poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) films for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), showing superior detection performance and multiplex detection ability. The transparent and flexible nature of the Au NSs/PMMA SERS substrate allows for in-situ, real-time detection of multiple antibiotics, potentially improving the detection of antibiotics for global food safety issues.

Detection of pesticides in food products using paper-based devices by UV-induced fluorescence spectroscopy combined with molecularly imprinted polymers

Milada Vodova et al.

Summary: In this proof-of-concept study, a method for detecting pesticides in food using UV-induced fingerprint spectroscopy, molecularly imprinted polymers, and paper-based analytical devices was explored. The method was able to positively identify commercially available spraying formulations containing the selected pesticides by swab testing sprayed apple and tomato samples. The findings suggest the potential application of this method in in-field testing of food and uncovering issues such as false product labelling.

Highly sensitive SERS detection and photocatalytic degradation of 4-ami- nothiophenol by a cost-effective cobalt metal-organic framework-based sandwich-like sheet

Changli Shi et al.

Summary: An innovative composite sheet (Ag/ZIF-67/TiO2/Cu) with well-dispersed Ag nanoparticles was successfully developed for highly sensitive detection and efficient degradation of 4-aminothiophenol. This novel sheet exhibited outstanding SERS response to 4-ATP with only 0.5 wt% Ag, high photocatalytic degradation capability reaching 100% efficiency within 15 minutes, and excellent reusability.

In-situ growth of gold nanoparticles on electrospun flexible multilayered PVDF nanofibers for SERS sensing of molecules and bacteria

Dongzhen Chen et al.

Summary: A smart strategy for fabricating flexible plasmonic fibers with high sensitivity and reproducibility has been reported, where gold nanoparticles are in-situ grown on the high-curvature surface of multilayered PVDF nanofibers. This approach enables sensitive detection of thiram molecules and valid SERS signal on 3D surface of bacteria. The 3D distribution of hotspots on multilayered PVDF@Au nanofibers provides a clear advantage for SERS sensing of organic molecules and microbial cells.
